What exactly happens when you turn on Microsoft Updates when installing a SCOM MS server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

What exactly happens when you turn on Microsoft Updates when installing a SCOM MS server?

Is specifically for SCOM Microsoft Updates enabled? Or is just automatic updates enabled in general.

    Regards,

    Chris

  • Did some testing, and I can now confirm that the "Microsoft Update" check box that appears in the SCOM installation does enable the "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows".

    So the following option:

I couldn't find any registry entry or settings in SCOM for the automatic update for SCOM.

The only way to disable it is to simply remove the check box from the Windows Update settings (the setting provided in the above pictures).

  • Hi Chris,

If you check the check box for "Microsoft Update" during the installation of a SCOM management server, Windows Update will automatically check for updates related to SCOM.

As you can see in the Microsoft Update Catalog, all the Update Rollups for SCOM are listed:
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Operations%20Manager

These can then be downloaded via Windows Update, although I would personally recommend manually installing the Update Rollups.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • But only for SCOM? How does that work under the 'hood'? I can imagine automatic updates is simply enabled to check for 'Other Microsoft updates' and therefore will update more than SCOM alone ...

  • I believe it will start checking specifically for SCOM related updates.

  • Thanx Leon,

When it has been enabled during install, is it possible to disable this again afterwards?

    Regards,

    Chris

  • I’m not sure, I don’t have a computer to check this right now, but there ”might” exist a registry key for this setting.
