Server 2012R2 won't install 47 updates RRS feed

  • Dotaz

  • Hello all,

I have a virtual machine that has been updated from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 R2. All software that was installed on this server works, everything is fine apart from I’m having real difficultly getting Windows Updates installed.

We use WSUS and all the updates download and it tries to install. So far, through a lot of effort, I have managed to install approx 100 have but the rest always fail with error code 0x800f0922 If I try to de-select and just install a couple, annoyingly, it still tries to install them all.

I have tried clearing C:\Temp and removing C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder I have tried running the Reset-WindowsUpdate Powershell script to reset windows components, etc I have tried downloading updates direct from MS and have tried using an offline WSUS installer. Both have the same issue as when the updates are downloaded through the WSUS server. I have tried downloading various individual updates and roll up packs and installing individually but none install.

One thing I have noticed is that if I use the offline installer, it seems to go through a cycle of installing KB3172614, installing, rebooting then if you run again, prompts you to reboot then recall?

This is a sample of what I am seeing in ReportingEvents:

Package KBXXXXXXX failed to be changed to the installed state. Status 0x800f0922.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. We have lots of servers that need updating so ideally, I need to get to the bottom of why this is happening and not re-build from scratch.

    Kind Regards

  • 1. Check the enough free space of your C drive for updates.

  • Hi

    Please try the following steps:

    1.Stop the Windows Update service;

    net stop wuauserv

2.Delete the Windows Update cache directory C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

    Remove-Item -Recurse -Force C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

3.Restart the computer. (On one machine it required several restarts to actually get everything deleted from this directory, so keep trying if necessary.)

4.Run Windows Update manually again. It will fail almost instantly and offer to run a diagnostic tool.

5.The tool will find and fix some problems. At this point, run Windows Update manually again. Windows Update worked fine at this point.

Besides, you can refer to the following link for more help:

Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool

    Hope can help you.

    Best regards

  • Hi Kiki,

    Thanks for replying.

I have tried the majority of what you suggested before with the exception of Remove-Item -Recurse -Force C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

I was unable to run this command? I did try Googling but can you confirm the syntax is correct?

Running DISM reported that it had fixed some corruption but the remaining updates still fail to install.

    Many Thanks

    Gary

  • Hello,

Yes - deleted the folder many times before. It does seem to help as I have managed to get it down to just 18 updates missing by installing them in batches.

If I stop BITS and Windows update services then manually download and install one of the missing updates for example KB3138602, it installs, requests a reboot then fails.

  • Hi Kiki,

Sorry for the delay, I forgot to follow up on this one.

There is no VPN and .NET Framework is enabled and the latest version has been installed. There is plenty of available space on the OS drive.

Unfortunately, updates have still been failing to install every day.

    Kind Regards

    Gary

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the reply delays.

Have you checked your Internet connection and if you turn off your Firewall cause even Firewall can prevent updates occasionally.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Have a nice day^_^

  • Hello,

The internet works fine, all firewalls are turned off and there is no VPN yet every single day, the updates try to install and fail.

Are there any log files I could upload that would help?

    Kind Regards

  • Thanks Kiki,

I have installed Wdbg to the server but I have never used this before, do I need to attach a specific process?

If you can give me a quick explanation of what to do, i'll get this running.
