RDS 2019 + KB4519338 Roaming Start Menu fails RRS feed

  • Dotaz

  • Cross-post from here, where I was redirected to this forum.

We have a bunch of Server 2019 RDS machines, that until last weekend worked fine. For roaming the start menu we roam AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore and so far that worked perfectly for having for examples Tiles saved that users put in the start menu themselves.

Since installing KB4519338 this weekend during our maintenance, the start menu is not working anymore. Only right-click works, but the start menu itself is not functional. We all know the start-menu terror from Windows 10 syspreps and what not. When I remove AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore from roaming, the start menu works again, but of course customizations aren't saved. We've tried roaming AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches as well, as that's to be seen in some howto's, but we've never found that to be needed, and it doesn't help here either.

Anyone else with this issue? By the way the latest as of yet KB4520062 does not fix this either, even if that has some start menu fixes.

  • Questions about issues within an RDS environment are best asked in the forum dedicated to that topic.  You will find more RDS experts at https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverTS

  • Well it's about roaming profiles, not specifically exclusive to RDS. But I will cross-post.

Post in RDS forum is here, let's see which one works better.

  • Hi,

Please test on one server that if issue will disappear after you uninstall the patch or roll back to previous patch.

It will be appreciated if you could share us the error messages when you said the start menu was not working if any. I will  report the details to the escalation team after receiving your next reply and let them verify if this was a bug or not.

Thanks and looking forward to your update.

    Best Regards,

    Jenny

  • There is no error message whatsoever, the start menu just isn't working. When you left-click it just nothing happens. I'll try to uninstall the patch and report.

  • Hi,

How about the event logs? Did it record anything unusual?

Check Event logs that record Start Issues

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuration/start-layout-troubleshoot#check-event-logs-that-record-start-issues

    Thanks,

    Jenny

  • Sorry, I could've done some more testing before posting. I've installed a fresh machine from media, so any eventual issues in my templates can be forgotten. I've manually updated it one by one:

    KB4512578 - works
    KB4522015 - works
    KB4516077 - works
    KB4524148 - works
    KB4519338 - doesn't work anymore
Uninstall KB4519338, back at KB4524148 level: works again.

From https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuration/start-layout-troubleshoot#check-event-logs-that-record-start-issues: No abnormal logs. Microsoft-Windows-ShellCommon-StartLayoutPopulation logs a Event 1402 and 1403 for each login, which is 'Data Store Cache secondary data reconciliation start' and 'Data Store Cache secondary data reconciliation end'. Just informational events, no errors.

The application log though shows an application error that's related to the issue:

Faulting application name: ShellExperienceHost.exe, version: 10.0.17763.719, time stamp: 0x5d527183
Faulting module name: StartUI.dll, version: 10.0.17763.1, time stamp: 0x5b9c58c5
    Exception code: 0xc000027b
    Fault offset: 0x000000000014131d
    Faulting process id: 0x2ac
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d58976bb57f7b3
    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\SystemApps\ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\ShellExperienceHost.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\ShellExperiences\StartUI.dll
    Report Id: fa06858a-b6f0-4dd9-9304-4f64ce0dcabb
    Faulting package full name: Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_10.0.17763.1_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy
    Faulting package-relative application ID: App

Procmonning this shows me that with KB4524148 installed, during the login process (wow, now THAT generates quite a log file) C:\Users\<TESTUSER>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore\cloudstore.dat is read by SearchUI.exe, with result SUCCESS.

However with KB4519338 the result is ACCESS DENIED. With KB4519338 installed or not, the cloudstore folder in the local copy of the profile has  permissions for two enourmous SIDs I don't recognise:

    icacls CloudStore
    CloudStore S-1-15-3-1024-3035980445-2343077072-2039973919-2593655016-2336600711-3402322490-2613491542-1611519126:(F)
               S-1-15-3-1024-3035980445-2343077072-2039973919-2593655016-2336600711-3402322490-2613491542-1611519126:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F)
               S-1-5-32-3035980445-2343077072-2039973919-2593655016-2336600711-3402322490-2613491542-1611519126:(F)
               S-1-5-32-3035980445-2343077072-2039973919-2593655016-2336600711-3402322490-2613491542-1611519126:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F)
               NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(OI)(CI)(F)
               BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(OI)(CI)(F)
               <TESTUSER>:(I)(OI)(CI)(F)

Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files

However, when they are roamed to the fileserver, those SID get removed, both when KB4519338 installed or not. When the user logs in again, the local profiles gets those SIDs assigned again. I've tried setting everyone full control on the roamed profile, but it seems the permissions are reset when the files are copied to the local profile during login. Also, the files can actually be copied (they end up on the local machine fine). The error also is obviously on the already copied to local files.
When I delete the CloudStore folder from the roamed profile, and login again, the start menu works again as stated, but ofcourse any tiles the user put there himself (ie. pin to start menu) are lost. The cloudstore folder gets re-created, with the exact same security.

So for some reason, with KB4519338 installed, even while actually copying the CloudStore files from the roaming profile works, reading them after that doesn't.

  • Hi Robert,

Thanks so much for your test and details. You may revert to the previous KB as a workaround.

In the meanwhile, I 've reported your findings and test of KB KB4519338 to the escalation team. When next round of KB is ready, you could test that version.

    Thanks,

    Jenny

  • Any update? Could they reproduce? Do they recognise it?
    úterý 5. listopadu 2019 8:37
  • Hi,

Sorry for late update. Per checking, there is a bug under investigation for Start menu fail for roaming profile users after installing patch of 2nd week of October.

The fix was expected to release on mid of November, please keep an eye on that.

    Thanks for your understanding.

  • My initial tests show that the just released KB4523205 from November 12th fixes it. However, there is no mention at all in the release notes. Seems they shove this one under the carpet once again. Anyway, so far it looks good.

    Thanks for your help Jenny!
