Security Center service is turned off, Error 1068 RRS feed

  • Frage

  • I have a Window Security Alert that indicates that the Security Center is turned off. When I attempt to turn it on I get the message:

The Security Center service can't be started.

I tried opening 'services,' clicking 'automatic' under 'security center properties' (it was set as automatic delay mode before) and tried pushing 'start.' When I did that, I got the message: Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

    How can I fix this?

  • In Security Centre's Properties in Services there is a Dependency tab. Make
sure each service on that tab is started.

  • Hi, you said.. "In Security Centre's Properties in Services there is a Dependency tab. Make
sure each service on that tab is started."
Okay. So here the dependencies are 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)'
    and 'Windows Management Instrumentation'
Thanks for the clues! This'll help when trying to fix other services that won't run too.
    Regards, pkn

  • go to start ->services.msc->check that  these services 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' and 'Windows Management Instrumentation' are set to automatic and start them then start "security center service". It should work :)

  • Hi! I have the same problem but I cannot start WMI nor the WSC. Is there any other way to overrun error 1068? Thanks!

  • You need to start the services from deep to shallow on the dependency tab.

If you have a problem with a service then we need that error number.

  • To configure and start Security Centre.

Then Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Type (or copy the below lines and one blank line underneath and right click in the command prompt window and choose Paste). This will start the dependent services in the correct order. Then turn it on once started.

If you get an error message you can copy it by right clicking the window, choosing Mark, selecting the text, and press enter.

    sc start DCOMLaunch
    sc start RpcSs
    sc config Winmgmt start= auto
    sc start Winmgmt
    sc config Wscsvc start= auto
    sc start wscsvc

  • Dear David,

I'm having the exact same problem getting Security Center to start. WINMGMT appears to be the problem. Here's what I got when I ran the command prompts you provided:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

    C:\Windows\system32>sc start DCOMLaunch
    [SC] StartService FAILED 1056:

An instance of the service is already running.

    C:\Windows\system32>sc start RpcSs
    [SC] StartService FAILED 1056:

An instance of the service is already running.

    C:\Windows\system32>sc config Winmgmt start= auto
    [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS

    C:\Windows\system32>sc start Winmgmt

    SERVICE_NAME: Winmgmt

            STATE              : 2  START_PENDING

            WIN32_EXIT_CODE    : 0  (0x0)
            SERVICE_EXIT_CODE  : 0  (0x0)
            CHECKPOINT         : 0x0

            PID                : 1184
            FLAGS              :

    C:\Windows\system32>sc config Wscsvc start= auto
    [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS

    C:\Windows\system32>sc start wscsvc
    [SC] StartService FAILED 1068:

The dependency service or group failed to start.

    C:\Windows\system32>

Any suggestions how to fix?  Thanks much!

  • Run those commands twice. If Wimmgmt is exiting after starting you'll beable to start it each time you try, ratherthan getting StartService FAILED 1056:

An instance of the service is already running the second time.

WMI is Windows Management Instrumentation. It's part of Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) and lives in c:\windows\system32\wbem.

It's a way to monitor and control computers, one command works on either 1 or 10,000 computers at a time. Makes life easy if you have a lot of computers.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Management_Instrumentation

  • Also look in Event Logs for further info on why winmgmt is exiting. Use the time field.
