Software installation problem: "internal error 2738"

    Frage

  • I was trying to install a software package on Win 7 RC1 x64 (all updates), but I always get an "internal error 2738". I tried several compatibility settings (Vista, XP SP2, Vista SP1) with no luck. I found some hints to register VBScript.DLL ( regsvr32 VBScript.DLL in system32 with admin privileges) but this doesn't help.
    Any further suggestions?

  • What is the softwapre package you're trying to install?

  • It's a collection of software for business start-ups. The installer was made with InstallShield. Unfortunately I got no answer on my support request.

  • I get the same error when trying to install cisco vpn client 5.0.5.0290. It installed ok on one machine, but continously fails with 'Internal error 2738' on another machine; both were upgraded from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 32-bit. The proposed solution (elsewhere) about registering vbscript.dll does not work for me.

  • Stepinsky,

It's an imperfect solution, but given that you've already exhausted everything else I'd have suggested, would you lose anything by running it in XP Mode in Microsoft's new Virtual PC ?

  • I found a solution for the problem (at least worked for me). Found this http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/06/07/3151752.aspx and it pointed at a root cause. Following those instructions worked, copied here for completeness.

    Hope this works for you...

If you have these scripting engines registered under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, you need to make sure that you remove that registration and re-register them under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.  You can use the following steps to unregister them from HKEY_CURRENT_USER:

    1. Click on the Start menu, choose Run, type cmd and click OK
    2. To unregister the VBScript engine, run this command:  reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f
    3. To unregister the JScript engine, run this command: reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F414C260-6AC0-11CF-B6D1-00AA00BBBB58}" /f

  • @micky1:
Thanks for your reply. From what I understand after reading the msdn blog entry, your solution should not be necessary if one registered the VBScript.dll from an admin shell. On my system your suggested "reg delete" commands weren't successful because the keys don't exist.
The interesting part is that it's not a x64 related problem.

    @axfelix:
I'm using an Intel Core2Duo 7300 processor which doesn't provide the VT command required for VirtualPC. I'm familiar with virtualization (running VirtualBox), but I have no Win XP license left. I don't know if it's possible to get the XP Mode image without VirtualPC and use it with VirtualBox.

  • Stepinsky,

It isn't, I'm afraid - I'm in the same boat with an E5200!

  • I was installing LifeSize conferencing software on windows 7 and received that error 2738.

I logged out of my domain account and logged in as a local user with admin rights and it work.
