How to turn off data execution prevention in windows 7

    Question

  • Hi, currently I tried to install a software which will involved DEP in windows 7. I turned DEP off in win xp by editing the boot.ini file to totally turn off the DEP. Can anyone tell me how to edit the boot file on win 7 to turn off DEP? Thanks!

  • DEP should not be disabled, its intended to prevent some malware from gaining control of a machine. There is no boot option to do that. Its possible to disable it, but I strongly suggest not doing that as it will expose you to a lot of risks.

  • Hi Ben, I agree with Vegan. It is recommended that not disable DEP. However, if you still want to turn it off, you can try the steps in the following link:

    Change Data Execution Prevention settings
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-Data-Execution-Prevention-settings

Note: you can choose "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and servuces only" in the last step.

    Hope this helps!

  • You can use BCDEdit to completely disable DEP on a Windows 7 machine.

    bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

    Reboot following that command.
