A newer version of OneDrive is installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Somehow my version of OneDrive for Win10 x64 is not working properly while OD for business appears to be working fine.  I am not able to find/launch it at all so I have been trying to uninstall it via command line

    %systemroot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall

but I get an error OD couldn't be uninstalled error 80070057

    When I try to re-install

    %systemroot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe

I get an error stating that a newer version is already installed.  So, I tried to reset OD

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

However, that directory does not exist.  Windows is fully up to date.  The OD process is not running so trying to stop it does not work.  Any advice?

  • Hi krdell,

Are there any or error messages recoreded in the Event Viewer(Windows Logs\Applications, System)?

First of all, please check whether the "OneDriveSetup.exe" is existed in "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" or "C:\Windows\System32". Check its version.

If it existed in C:\Windows\SysWOW64, try to open an administrator command in that folder then run "OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall" to uninstall onedrive.

"However, that directory does not exist"
Try to login with another account or create a new account. There is a possibility that present account has been corrupted.

    Best regards

  • It does exist but when I attempt to uninstall I get error 80070057 OneDrive couldn't be uninstalled.  Logging in as a different account doesn't resolve the problem unfortunately

  • Hi krdell,

"Logging in as a different account doesn't resolve the problem unfortunately"
Do you mean the OneDrive for the new user is corrupted, too?
Please open an administrator command line and run "sfc /scannow" or "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" to check the health of system files.

In addition, please check whether there is a file "onedrivesetup.exe" located in "%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update".
If it is existed, try to  open an administrator command line in that folder then run "onedrivesetup /uninstall"  to uninstall OneDrive and install OneDrive again.

    Best regards

  • I am afraid the scans did not find anything out of the ordinary.  As I stated in my original post, the

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive

    directory does not exist

  • Hi krdell,

    "%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrivedirectory does not exist"
Have you ticked the "show hidden folder" option?

Did the OneDrive on the new user work well?

"I get an error stating that a newer version is already installed"
Try to search "onedrivesetup.exe" in C:\.

    Best regards

  • Yes.  OD works for no users.  I found 2 other onedrivesetup.exe locations but get the same result with both

  • Hi krdell,

What is the exact location of the other two?

Please compare their version with the one in C:\Windows\SysWOW64(right click them choose "Properties", "Details"). According to the error message, there should be a newer version OneDrivesetup.exe on this machine.

Search for OneDrive.exe application in C:\, too.

    Best regards

  • They are located in

    C:\Windows\WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-onedrive-setup_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.0_none_5d0956f97123b1d2

    and

    C:\Windows\WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-o..ve-setup-executable_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.953_none_f8617f223228ce7c

They are same version as the one located in syswow64.  There is no onedrive.exe on C

  • Hi krdell,

    It is weired.
"I get an error stating that a newer version is already installed"
According to this error message, there should be another newer Onedrive version installed on the machine but we didn`t find it. Try to search "Onedrive" on other drives, too.

    Best regards

  • Don't know if this helps, but I had the same problem.  I found a copy of OneDriveSetup.exe here: 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Integration'

After running it in an admin level CMD with the flag /uninstall, (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Integration\OnDriveSetup.exe /Uninstall), and rebooting,  I was then able to run the OneDriveSetup found in SysWOW64.

I also found out what caused the issue (in my case) to begin with.  My AV identified suspicious activity (IDP.alexa.51) with OneDrive and I told it to 'fix' it.  It turned out to be a false positive but it removed some of the core files.  After reinstalling, I got those warnings again but told the AV to ignore.  All is well now.

    Friday, April 14, 2017 8:06 PM
  • Unfortunately that directory does not exist for me just C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16...there is no onedrive.exe in there

I completely removed my AV as a test just to see then try and reinstall OD but that didn't work either.

  • Hi krdell,

Considering we have tried so many ways and the issue persists, the last thing we could try is to perform an in-place upgrade repair. Boot from a Windows 10 installation media and choose "Upgrade" install.

  • We are having this exact same problem and it didn't start until this past week. Microsoft just spent 2 hours on the phone with me and couldn't fix it either and told me I had to reset the entire OS and that's not an answer since I can't do that for every machine we have deployed (over 40 so far). I'm going to keep working at it but I'm in the same boat. Did you have any luck?

  • Yes.  Follow this link and use the installer to re-install:

    https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-us/download/

    Friday, May 19, 2017 4:28 PM
  • Nope, doesn't work...same loop...says newer version is installed.
    Friday, May 19, 2017 4:38 PM
  • Strange.  So going there then downloading and installing this didn't work for you?  After banging my head against this issue for hours that finally worked for me.

  • fair play no one had the answer my issue was

this application failed to start because it could not find or load the qt platform plugin "windows"

this solved it If it existed in C:\Windows\SysWOW64, try to open an administrator command in that folder then run "OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall" to uninstall onedrive.

then i could reinstall and worked

    thank you so much

  • Here is a reference to the problem - left alone at "User Voice":
    https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forums/262982-onedrive/suggestions/18734299-fix-a-newer-version-is-installed-and-onedrive-fa

I did a post on TechNet about it here confirming it - a references to similar testing issues with domain users and roaming profiles.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a1513b79-7596-47ca-adad-629b134c5c71/onedrive-not-always-compatible-with-roaming-profiles-and-business-users-in-windows-10?forum=win10itprogeneral

Too many of these cases where roaming profiles has not be properly tested with features and changes in Windows client. Especially, when Windows client is redeployed - i.e. Windows 10 updated.

  • Strangely, the download link on the OneDrive page https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-gb/download/ gives the won't install behaviour BUT the link in the Hints and Tips section here https://support.office.com/en-us/article/fixes-or-workarounds-for-recent-issues-in-onedrive-36110213-f3f6-490d-8cb7-3833539def0b

does work. It downloads, runs and then disappears without the usual behaviour of having to sign in and setup OneDrive. But when you look, the OneDrive cloud in the taskbar has reappeared and OneDrive starts syncing again.

  • I've had the problems with OneDrive going AWOL and reinstalls proving impossible because 'newer version'.

I can'tr remember where I found the suggestion but I use Start - Run - "%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update\OneDriveSetup.exe". This reinstalls OneDrive reliably on my Win 10 machine.

  • I have been having this same issue. Once I do get it to finally install. The next day it is gone again. Event viewer lists Event ID 1001 and Problem Signature P1: OneDriveSetup.exe. I have done this close to ten times. It works fine for a day then, gone the next morning. The OneDrive.exe is completely removed from the system. The device does have Malwarebytes on it but I have Exclusions in place. It also has Carbonite backup but I don't think that should affect it. Any suggestions would be great!
