how to install Windows 7 home premium with OEM product key

    Question

  • Hello,

Last year i purchased a sony vaio notebook which came with windows 7 home premium 64bit. My system has some issues and so i want to make a clean install. I didn't create the recovery disks needed to make a full system recovery. Is it possible to install the same version of windows with the current product key using a retail DVD of the same version of windows?

    Thank you,

    Dimitris

  • Hi fodim,

In your case it is best to contact Sony Support and order the system restore disk. Not very expensive and doesn't take that long. Then your key on the computer will work.

The OEM's that do not include a recovery partiton should place a large sticker on the screen "Create Recovery Disks Now!"

Are you sure there is not an option to recover"Recover Complete C: Option" from the partition on the hard drive in the BIOS options? Copy your data first.

  • Hi, OEM key only works with OEM DVD.

You won't be able to activate windows 7 retail with your oem key.

Extract the OEM certificate from the OEM DVD and install with slmgr.vbs (slmgr.vbs -ilc sony.xmr-ms). Now type in the OEM SLP Key from the OEM DVD and now Windows activates itself. This only works on the OEM hardware with the SLIC 2.1 data in the BIOS.

  • What step by step?

run a keyfinder on a machine installed with the OEM media to get the OEM SLP Key. Store this key. Now find the OEM certificate (.xmr-ms) on the OEM machine and store it on an external drive.

Install Windows with the clean MS DVD. After installing install the .xmr-ms with the slmgr.vbs script, type in the OEM SLP key and activate Windows.

  • The key from the sticker is no OEM SLP, this is an OEM/COA Key which requires activation. The OEM certificate (.xmr-ms) is stored under C:\Windows\system32\oem\.

  • I  don't ahve an OEM copy, I only made this for a friend with his Vista. I've added the certificate + OEM SLP key into a new Sp2 integrated ISO and installed the PC again.
