"upgrade" from win 7 pro to ultimate

    Question

  • I currently have win7pro installed and got a a free win7ultimate (alignIT tour). Can I upgrade from one version of windows 7 to another (pro>ultimate) simply by "upgrading" and have no problems? (so no clean install)

I mean yes the "upgrade" option is available, but what does it do in this particular situation? Does it only add the missing modules (bitlocker for example) or does it screw pretty much everything up as it does when we upgrade from vista>seven?

I don't want to reinstall all my stuff, but bitlocker sounds great so ...:)

  • Yes, you can do a anytime upgrade from Professional to Ultimate http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx  as for differences, just view the details. Personally, I'd always do a fresh install.

  • oh right "anytime upgrade" I remembered reading something about that but didn't remember it exactly.

From what I understand WAU uses its own own special CDkey ... http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/pages/the-windows-anytime-upgrade-experience-for-windows-7.aspx I'll take a look at this tonight but I'm unsure I can use a full W7 ultimate CDkey with this ... thx anyway (would be nice if the w7 ultimate "upgrade" would do this anytime update itself :/)

  • Hi,

Just input the Windows 7 Ultimate key to Windows Anytime Upgrade to test. It will do an upgrade via downloading but not a clean install.
