Setup is checking video performance - hangs

    Question

  • After installing I was taken to a screen saying "Setup is checking video performance." It just hangs, I have left it for a few hours and still nothing has happened. Should I wait a bit longer or reboot my PC?

    Specs:
    ASUS p5ql pro MOBO
    Intel E8500
    EVGA 8800GTS
    2 gigs DDR 2 800Mhz RAM
    80 gig HDD
    160 gig HDD
    500 Watt Areocool PSU

  • WTH?!?! It worked; though I think it was more because of the restart than switching ports!
I should have done this hours ago, I was just too nervous to restart!

  • Same exact thing happened to me.

  • I don't understand what you mean.

  • Are you using an LCD?

Is it plugged into port 1 of your video card?

If it is, try moving it to the second video port.

  • Yes and yes, but what difference will that make?

  • I had the same problem.

I plugged a CRT(non lcd monitor) into port 2 and I had my screen.

I think if you just move your monitor to port 2 it will work.

What will it cost you?  Nothing.  It will either woek or not.

  • I think my second port doesn't work; doesn't display anything!

  • Wait, are you under the perception that my monitor does not display anything?

  • Did you reboot the machine after you moved the cable?

Do you have an old CRT (tube type monitor)?

  • Wouldn't rebooting have a negative effect on the install?

No, I have an LCD monitor.

  • But how will this affect the fact that windows is hanging?
    Monday, May 11, 2009 6:41 PM
  • I don't think the install is completed yet.

Does the monitor have a d_sub (15 pin ) connector or DVI )wide connector)?

There are issues with the nvidia drivers in the win 7  RC.

Once you get a screen you should be able to complete install and download
    win 7 drivers from EVGA.

  • I have HDMI connectors.
If I cannot Finnish the installation how am I meant to install drivers?

  • Can you borrow an old CRT.

What is the name and model of your monitor?

  • I don't see what the monitor has to do with anything!
I read somewhere that the hardware scan can take several hours but I think it's not meant to take this long!
    Can you please clarify:
In your understanding what do you think the circumstances of the problem are, I think there is a great deal of confusion.

  • OK, the drivers for nvidia that come on the install DVD for win 7 do not work in most cases.

I don't know why and I'm not sure anyone does at this point.

A DVI inerface works differently than a VGA interface.

The hardware scan is already done if you got to Checking Video Performance and win 7
is ready to boot for the last time.

There have been reports that when win 7 boots with nvidia cards that it switches to
the second video port and that port becomes the default.

You are using the DVI connector from your monitor to the posrt on your video card.

That may be an issue.  If you got adapters with your monitor or video card that convert
from DVI to VGA you might want to try them in both port 1 and port 2.

I had exactly the same problem.  I temporarily used a CRT to complete the install.

I know it doesn't sound like it should work, but it does.

If you check this board you will see many people with the same issue and they all have
    nvidia cards.

    Has this helped any?

  • So do I have to restart my PC?
Where will the installation be left off?

  • Try restarting.  I forget what screen first displays.  It might be the screen where you input key

The weird thing is that my drivers seem to function perfectly!
