Delete Windows.old Folder

  • I'm trying to delete the Windows.old folder in my main drive, but in the process of deleting, it says that I require "SYSTEM" user's permission to do so.  I'm the only user on the computer.  I tried booting in safe mode if perhaps the computer was doing something in the Windows.old folder while I was trying to delete it - to no avail.  Any suggestions?

  • It takes some doing, but the first step is to use the security tab to take ownership of Windows.old and all its sub directories.  After you've done that you should be able to delete it successfully.

  • Tnxs!

One note: after starting the tool  you need to select the option Clean up system files.
After the recalculation the option previous Windows installations appears.

  • Do tell, where do I find this program on Server 2012?

  • Nope. Took ownership as the domain admin account I'm logged in as, and I still can't delete.
