After an unsuccesful SP3 installation attempt, my XP Pro system keeps booting into Windows XP Pro Setup and aborts/reboots due to missing setup file.
Looks like SP3 setup has changed something in the boot sector and failed to restore it after aborting setup.
System boots into a setup menu which has 2 options,
1)Windows XP Pro Setup (default selection...auto selects this after 3 secs.)
2)Windows XP Pro (normal boot.. system runs normally when I choose this.)
I managed to reinstall SP3 successfuly but it keeps entering in boot menu and running the XP Setup everytime I reboot.
I need to manually select 2 to prevent it getting into an endless loop of reboots.
There was a temporary setup folder on boot drive named $WIN_NT$.BT. I tried deleting it but it didn't work.
Is there a way to undo the change that SP3 setup done to the boot sector?
The changes you need to make are in the hidden system file:
which you can edit with Notepad. You might need to turn on the viewing of hidden files first, in control panel "Folder Options", tab "View"
