Bitlocker on SSD that will not boot to Windows 10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am taking over as the IT person at a small company with no turnover, last person left unexpectedly.  I inherited an important laptop that will not boot.  Laptop is a dell precision 7510 with a 512 GB NVMe and the drive is encrypted with BitLocker.  I can boot up and enter the PIN just fine, after that I get the option for startup repair (which fails) or boot to windows (which fails).  I can boot to a windows 10 thumb drive but that does not allow me to enter the PIN and doesn't detect the hard drive.  I was told a previous IT person made a bootable thumb drive with all the dell drivers on it for the laptop and it worked yet no one has any additional info on how that was done.  Any help is appreciated!

  • Can you boot into Safe mode?

Try to enter the advanced options screen:
Advanced Options > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt

    Manage-bde -status c:

    Manage-bde -unlock c: -rp <recovery-key-including-dashes>

    Manage-bde -protectors -disable c:

This stops the drive form asking for encryption password during next boot

If the above doesn't help then you may have to go for a Clean install.

  • Data recovery will not be possible without the recovery password (not the PIN) - do you have it?

  • Hi,

Check the following to restore or recover using the recovery drive, please note we need a recovery key to decrypt the device:
