Event ID 1058 Error Code 1326 Logon Failure; unknown user name or bad password

    Question

  • I am attempting to apply a group policy to a group of computers and I will get this event ID and error code generated.  I can unc to the gpt.ini file.  What can I do to resolve this problem?  My structure is like this:  I have a 2003 R2 DC located at site A (and this computer WIN7 is also located at site A) and I also have other 2003 DC's located at remote offices (across WAN links).  This computer seems to be wanting to apply the GPO from one of the remote office DC's as opposed to the local DC that is much closer - how can I change how GPO is processed on this computer?

  • Hello,

I suggest, you need to have proper AD structure for smooth functioning of GPO's.

Please have a look into this GP guidelines article and configure GPO's accordingly.:http://www.grouppolicy.biz/2010/07/best-practice-group-policy-design-guidelines-part-2/

Feel free to write here again if you need any other help.

  • Did you try the unc path using the domain name? Then I would suggest trying the unc path on each DC you have - maybe sysvol replication failed... In addition, do some research on"Site Coverage".

    regards, Martin

NO THEY ARE NOT EVIL, if you know what you are doing: Good or bad GPOs?

  • Thanks for the reply Ravikumar - I'm going to look into all of that today and I'll post my results.  It is an intermittent problem because the GPO seems to apply, then not, then apply again.  Do you know how I can effectively "shape" how or where my client computers process GPO's from?  For example, I don't want this computer to attempt to search the sysvol folder on a remote server because we have poor bandwidth links between our remote sites and where this computer actually is.  I would like to see how I can force this computer and all the others at Site A to only look at Site A's DC for GP processing.  It doesn't seem like a tough concept, maybe there are metrics that I can apply somewhere?

Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:

                a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.

                b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
