Use Windows Update for drivers on Network Printer

    Question

  • When adding a local printer you have the option of checking Windows Update for printer drivers.  However, when adding a shared printer that doesn't have the correct driver available on it Windows Update is not an option.  You have to have a drivers disk to install the printer.  Is there a way to use Windows Update to find a printer driver for a shared network printer?  If not can this feature be added?

  • Hi,

if the printer is on print server you can add the correct drivers for printer on print server and then you will find and install the network printer without any trouble. If tje printer is shared on neihbor computer, you have no option to use windows update to serach for driver and addig this option is difficult, because you have acces only to shared device not to device it self. that mean you see only device type and shre permission. if you try to install this device windows will try to use drivers currently have for printers. if match than will install it, if not than will ask for correc drivers.

... IMHO I hope that it`s works that way ;)

  • I don't mean to have Windows Update search for a driver.  I mean have a Windows Update button to select from known drivers.  If you install a printer locally you can search for the driver manually.  When searching manually there is a Windows Update button to pull in more drivers from Windows Update to look through.  This option is not available when installing a network printer.  The only option available is to search for the printer driver files.  Known drivers or Windows Update drivers are not options.

  • As druid said, you don't have the permissions needed to do that. Adding your user to the admin users on the network machine would be necessary, so you could setup the found driver from some source. As it stands, even if Windows Update were available to you, you could not install it. No Permissions. You do not have admin rights on that network machine. You have share rights. If the driver is not now available for use, as set by that member machine, you don't get to add to that.
