Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

    Question

  • I have Win 7, 64-bit and get the following error when trying to do a Windows Update:

    • Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

    A restart does not help.

    I have tried starting and stopping the "Windows Update" service as well as the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" (BITS). Both are also set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)." Both stop, start, and restart without any issues.

    This is an authentic copy of Windows 7 (64-bit).

    I have also downloaded the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (1.9.0027.0) and what follows is the information from the tool:

    Basically, stop the Windows Update service, delete the files here: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and then restart the service.
