XP SP3 hangs at loading screen forever after reboot, no blue screen

  • Hi all. It's an Intel laptop, I installed all updates available through windows update, and the final update to be listed was SP3. After installing it (installation took quite a long time), the laptop can no longer boot up.

It makes it to the black XP loading screen, and the progress bar continues to cycle albeit slowly. Attempting safe mode leads to a blue screen that just has a '+' symbol in the top left, followed by a '_' symbol 5 spaces after. Nothing else is on the screen. Last known good configuration hangs at the progress bar similarly.

I have taken out the hard drive and checked it - no bad sectors. The event log lists absolutely nothing after SP3 was installed.

How can I diagnose this? I very much want to boot the laptop normally, not have to reload XP over the top of it.

  • Just a follow-up, attempting to enable boot logging leads to the same endless progress bar, however no longer how long I let it sit there it never writes the NtBtLog.txt file.
