Windows 7 SP1 Install Error 0x80004005

    Question

  • I just installed Windows 7 SP1 from Windows Update and I received this error: http://twitpic.com/42rree.  Any ideas? There were other updates to be installed along with SP. Also I'm on a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 and noticed after restart I missed selecting windows in bootcamp so it booted into mac and then I restarted into Windows.

There are a few entries in the event log such as the below:

  • Hi,

to see the cause of Windows 7 update failures, we must look for error messages in the file CBS.log.

Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the setupapi logs from the folder C:\Windows\Inf and the file "C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it), zip all files into 1 ZIP and upload the zip to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.

Jospeph or me take a look at the logs.

    André

  • Hi. Had the same error. Was able to resolve the issue by giving full control to the System and Administrator over the SQM folder in c:\Windows\servicing\sqm. If you look in your CBS.Log, you will see that the error that causing the fail occurs during an attempt to write to the SQM folder.

    Navigate to C:\Windows\servicing\sqm.

    Right click and choose Properties.

    Choose the security TAB.

Highlight System and click on edit.

Check Allow Full control and click OK.

Do the same for the Administrator.

    Restart the computer.

I ran the normal Update and it worked. Good Luck.

  • That didn't work for me. I did automount enable and select disk. I also changed bootcamp options to default to booting into Windows. From Disk Management I couldn't right click and make anything Active as it was always disabled but windows bootcamp partition appeared to be active. I also tried both from within bootcamp and within a VM (Parallels). No dice.

  • Thanks though unfortunately the security change on SQM folder didn't help me. After 4 downloads and install attempts and rollbacks, not sure I care anymore. I might try via MSDN instead of windows update; that at least should prevent redownload.

it must have something to do with Bootcamp. I don't use a Mac so I can't check this :( Wait from a reply of joscon , he works fro MSFT.

  • Hey Andre,

See this thread on the apple forums:

    http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13125893

People are reporting the Paragon HFS+ driver can cause this error. I have it installed and am having the same problem. Could be the issue, will try removing then updating.

  • That was it. Thanks so much for the help guys. It did get hung up on the "Personalizing settings for Windows update" after logging in afterwards. It eventually went through though after a cold boot.
