Epson Scanner Perfection 1240U and Windows 7

    Question

  • Does anyone know if their Vista Twain driver can be made to work with Windows 7.
I seems to install ok, but Windows 7 does not seem to recognize it.

  • Hamrick Software has a program VUESCAN 8.5.11 that I used on both Vista and Windows 7 for my very old BENQ 640U flatbed scanner.  I installed the prog and 7 automatically "fixed" my driver problem.

  • Did you install the drivers first and then connect the scanner?

  • No. I had the scanner connected first. Then I downloaded the driver and installed it.
I did reboot the PC, but that did not seem to help.

  • The correct proceedure is to install the drivers first and then connect the scanner.
I have an Windows XP set of instructions on how to fix this but I've never tried
    it with Wndows 7.

If 1959ALFA suggestion doesn't solve the promblem then post back an I'll give you my XP fix.

  • Thanks. I'll try VUESCAN and post my results later tonight.

  • I downloaded and installed VUESCAN. It was able to install a driver which can be used directly via Windows 7 or with the VUESCAN application.
In a quick test this app seems to generate better scans than via Windows 7.

    Thanks.

  • hi, I know this post is most likely too late but you don't need the Vuescan program for the epson 1240u . I found a while back a epson drive that had been modified to allow it to allow to install the epson perfection 1240u on Vista 64...I'm USING it right now and works great on W7 64 bit but is for U.S. only. Its called EPSON_PERFECTION_1240U_VISTA_x64_DRIVER_-_US_ONLY. I have it and its about 9 mb. Just google it...its all over google with rapidshare links or if you want me to email it just send email to country2@gmail.c-o-m (remove the -'s)

  • I installed a new HP PC for the next door neighbor and all software and devices purr along just fine EXCEPT the Epson 1240U scanner.  The Device Manager complains that the driver is not usable.  I go to the Epson website and download the only 32bit Twain driver they offer for Vista. Go thru all the directions and tried it 2 or 3 times.  Uninstalled everything and did it over.   No good. The driver Epson offers is from March 2007.

    Questions:
    1) Is there an Epson driver for the 1240U that actually works under Vista ?
    2) Without having to buy some 3rd party driver ?

What is the best solution ?

  • Hi,

I too went round the houses with exactly this same issue. I understand the other fixes that have been listed here, but really - shouldn't it just 'work'.

This is Windows 7, and you can't install a scanner??????

So I happened to have a Ubuntu installation on another disk, which I am new to. Fired it up, Applications, Graphics, Simple Scan.

And it scanned, I didn't even have to configure a thing, gave me a choice of file types and destinations. Everything I needed, nothing I didn't - now THAT is how you do it.

I had heard that W7 was better - it seems it is just as pathetic as every awful version before it, Microsoft seem to just stumble from one catastrophe to another these days.

Give Ubuntu a go mate - it's free, it's easy and it just works.

    Thanks mate

I have been struggling for days to get my 1240u to work under Windows 7 64 bit.

That driver you suggested works just fine.

    Again, thanks a lot

  • I have installed this driver for my Epson 1240U...

and the computor can recognize the scanner....

However...after preview....I pressed the "Scan" Button...it shown me the "File Save Setting" window...

When I pressed the "OK" button....all windows, including the Scanned windows had been closed.

    I did something wrong????
