  • Let's check the service and related key first.

    1. Input Services.msc in Start --- Search to start Services box. Check if Windows Backup service is Started and set as "Manual". If not, change it to Manual and click Start to start it. You can stop and then restart it, reboot to see the result.

    2. If issue still exists, find this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wbengine

Export it to Desktop as an REG file (as a backup) and delete the key. Then download this file, rename it to wbengine.reg and double click on it to import to Registry.

Then restart the computer to see the result.

  • Hi Brett,

There a a couple of reasons we have seen this happening other than genuine shadowcopy read errors as reported by the troubleshooter.
    1. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/973455/. This does not happen if you add any extra folder to a library. It happens only if a reparse point or a child of a reparse point is added to a library.
    2. Antivirus/Antimalware reporting some bad files and holding locks for those files. Backup fails when it tries to backup these files. For this, please remove the bad files reported by the Antivirus/Antimalware and rerun backup.
Can you check if one of them is true in your case and try the solution proposed? Please let me know if it solves your problem.

    Thanks,
    Sneha

  • Hi Brett,

We have seen this error (81000037) occur only if there is active Malware present which is included in backup. If your machine is clean, backup should work fine. You could try turning back on your AV and retrying backup if you have already made sure your machine is free of virus/malware. Hope this helps.

    Thanksm

  • system machanic is erported by some customers which will affect the key I mentioned. See this topic. The issue may be fixed in version 9.5.1 which is said in the topic. You can upgrade the program on your computer to have a test.

  • there is no malware and what is a reparse file?  The libraries its backing up are only documents, music, pictures and videos.
