Office 2016 Not Showing Up in Control Panel Program List RRS feed

  • Question

  • We recently installed Office 2016 (purchased from Amazon, traditional installation of the Office programs on the local hard drive of a single computer - one time cost of $205, no cloud or subscription involved, Windows 10 Pro OS).  The installation process seemed to go fine (ended smoothly, did not display any error or problem messages),  We are able to run all of the Office 2016 programs without any problems (via desktop icons, start menu in Windows 10).  However, Office 2016 does not show up on the list of installed programs in the Windows 10 control panel.  We have never had this problem with prior Office installations we have done (from 2016 all the way back to 2003).  We are not able to install add-on programs designed to work with Office because they "think" that  Office 2016 is not installed on the computer, which is a requirement for them to operate, needless to say.

How can we get Office 2016 to show up in its usual place in the Control Panel programs list?  Thanks very much for any assistance you can offer with this frustrating (and unexpected) problem.

  • Hi,

    • Which Office 2016 product did you buy from Amazon?  Is this Office 2016 working on that device? If so, You can open an Office App, such as Word, create a blank document, click File > Account to check Product Information of Office 2016 you are using?
    • How did you install Office  2016 before? Could you describe it in detail?
    • Before installation, how did you get the Office installation file? Did you log in with the associated account, get the online installer from the MyAccount page(https://www.office.com/myaccount), or did you use the My Office management tool from the Windows Store that comes with the Windows 10 system?
    • Could you provide some screenshots during Office installation to help me understand your problem?

Click Start button on Windows 10, click Settings icon> Apps > Apps & features, Can you find Office  2016 form the list?

If not, You can try to update your Office 2016 by referring to Install Office updates.

If the problem persists after updating Office, or updating Office is failed, you can try to uninstall Office 2016 and reinstall it to see if it works.

Method 1: Completely uninstall Office with the easy fix tool

Please download the tool in Uninstall Office from a PC and run it to uninstall Office from your PC, then reinstall Office 2016.

Method 2: Uninstall Office 365 with the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant tool

Go to this page to download the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant tool. Run the tool online after the installation is complete.

Click Office, then select the option ”I want to uninstall Office” and click Next , follow the prompts to uninstall Office.

To reinstall One-time purchased Office 2016

You can refer to Download and install or reinstall Office 365 or Office 2019 on a PC or Mac to learn how to install and activate Office 2016. Some Office for home products come with a product key. If yours did, before installing Office for the first time, sign in with an existing or new Microsoft account and enter your product key at office.com/setup. Redeeming your key is what links your account with Office so you only have to do this once.

In addition, It recommend that you check the version of Office supported by the add-in, and try to install the latest version to see if it can be installed.

If you have any question or update, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

    Herb Gu

  • Thank you for your response.  Sorry it has taken me some time to reply but the machine with the Office 2016 problem is a traveling laptop, which is often out-of-state.  Let me try and answer your questions:

1). The product is Office 2016 Home and Business.

2). The problem has occurred on the device (laptop computer) we purchased to run Office 2016 on.  As stated, the installation process seemed to go smoothly and we can use all Office modules (via desktop icons we created or from the Windows 10 start menu).  However, no Office programs (e.g., Word, Outlook) show up on the programs list in the Control Panel.

Office 2016 was never installed previously on this machine.

The product was purchased from Amazon and was installed per their instructions.  We downloaded the file from https://setup.office.com as instructed.  I used my Microsoft account in the process.

There are no screenshots of installation problems to send.  The only relevant screenshot I could send would be the list of programs (add/remove) in the Control Panel.  There is no sign there of Office.

Yes, as stated above, all Office programs show up on the Windows 10 start menu (but not in the Control Panel program list).  This is essential because we use a program from Google to sync Outlook mail, contacts and calendars between Outlook and Google G Sync applications in the cloud (GSSMO).

If I uninstall Office using one of the methods you suggest, will I then be able to reinstall it on the same machine?

Finally, we have installed numerous incidents of Office and have never had/seen this particular problem.

  • Hi,

Sorry for my delay. Have you solved this issue? If you remove Office from your laptop computer, You can reinstall and activate Office on it then. You can refer to Download and install or reinstall Office 365 or Office 2019 on a PC or Mac to learn how to install and activate Office 2016. You can check if reinstalling Office will solve this problem.

Usually, when we install the desktop version of Office 365 (one-time purchase version), we will see the Office 365 product in the list of programs in the Control Panel.
Note: There will be no single Office App(Word, Outlook… ) shown in Control Panel, unless it is a standalone retail edition of the app. Visio and Project are separate product from the Office.

For Office 365 Store Version , due to Microsoft's ongoing transition to the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) installation process from the Microsoft store, Microsoft Office now installed by default as an APP (also known as Centennial Bridge Mode). As a result, users may be confused when Office is not listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and the Office folder, in Windows, will show it contains 0MB of files. Microsoft Office Store Version is now listed in Apps and Features.

If you have any questions or updates, feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,
    Herb

  • Thank you for posting this. This issue was driving me nuts, since I was having issues with .doc files not being associated with Word recently for some random reason, and I could not locate my office installation in the Control Panel's Add/Remove Program menu (thanks Microsoft for moving that *very sarcastic*). It's good to know there is not some horrible issue that has come about as a result of another Windows update. :P

  • For my issue, Word is clearly installed because I can open a .docx file already created.  I just cannot open Microsoft Word any other way.  While this problem is annoying, I am not going to uninstall office and reinstall completely.  Is there any other way?  Excel and Powerpoint work fine.
