Xbox 360 wont connect to my laptop

  • My xbox 360 used to connect to my laptop without any problems. i ddnt even hav to configure any settings or start a setup or smthin, i jus conected directly. btw i HAD at that time windows xp home edition and conected thru wmp11. then i started having problems after instaling a program then my computer wudnt start anymor. so i repaired my computer with a cd caled "Windows XP Pro N Version 2002 Service Pack 2". i neva tried conecting to my computer after the repair cuz i traveled and started using dial up in that country. wen i came back i tried connecting but it wudnt work, so i updated it to sp3 n it made no diference. on my 360, wen i go to 'Music> then press x to change source> Computer> Test Conection' it passes the 1st 2 then it says failed on pc selected. the computer recognises the 360 but not vice versa. i did everything microsoft told me to do but no use. i configured the firewall setings, i enable sharing file and printer, i enabled the guest user. the 360 conects normaly to my other window vista based computer thru media center but i dnt hav media center on my xp based computer. sry for the huge post but i rely need help.

  • "Windows XP Pro N Version 2002 Service Pack 2" is a version of XP that does not contain Windows Media Player and its associated software.  You will need to download and install WMP 11.

Was there some reason you did not use the full version of XP to do the repair?

  • i do hav wmp11. i instaled a theme and wen i tried uninstaling it it said it failed. after that nothing apears on the desktop, it jus stays plain blue. i tried safe mode but it was the same. so i jus gave it to a shop and they fixed it. i told them that i dnt want a format. wen i got it back i noticed it was a diferent windows. but i do hav wmp11, i mean like nothing hapend 2 my files and programs after the repair, it was exactly the same. im not even sure that its the problem for the 360 not recognizing my laptop. i jus no that i traveld, started using dial up, came back, repaired the computer, tried connecting the 360 to my laptop and it wudnt work.

  • Maybe you should take this problem to the shop that worked on your PC, as maybe something thay have done has caused this problem.  I am quite suspicious about them putting XP Version N on your PC, as you did not have that product originally on your PC.  If they were going to repair your PC, they should have used the same version of XP as was on it before, using your own XP installation CD.

Does the X-box work if you fully disable the Windows Firewall temporarily?

Failing that, maybe you should try posting on an X-box support forum, as the problem might be quite specialised to the X-box, and the general expertise on this XP SP3 forum might not cover the X-box issues.

XP Version N is a stripped-down version of XP produced by Microsoft in response to a legal prosecution by the European Union.

can u send me a link to the xbox support forums cuz i searched but i cudnt find it.

  • The only thing I can think of which is worth doing before you try to change XP, is to download a fresh copy of WMP 11 and re-install it.  This should re-install the bits that the Xbox needs to work with.
