Vista Update Error 8024A000

Question
-
I have installed a new hdd and reinstalled windows MANY times. Continue to get the same error. I have tried the steps in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/windows-update-error-code-8024a000/562845f3-78d5-42a0-bed5-e3fd39f01df7?page=1&tm=1300981142411
I have also contacted Microsoft at: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527
The contacted me once. I sent them the sysinfo files and related files and CANNOT get any response. My client has been waiting for his computer for over a week and I usually have a 1 week turnaround. Please help!

Here's the solution. I had to replace a failed hard drive in a Vista laptop. The original drive was a 200GB and I replaced it with a 500GB. I used my original Toshiba restoration CDs. I've spent HOURS troubleshooting this problem and I never would have guessed the solution -- it's the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver. It has to be updated because of the larger drive.
Here's a link to an HP support site for the updated driver. You can also find the update on Intel's site.

Mr. David in Bishop, thanks very much for this solution which worked beautifully on my 2008 Dell XPS 1530 Laptop. I had to replace my hard drive because my machine was freezing after start up to which there was no solution and diagnostics listed an error. I replaced my 320 GB with 500GB and couldn't get updates and searched for a week before finding your simple solution.
Thanks again!!

David in Bishop -- I too wish to thank you for your post. My son crashed the 320G HDD in his Asus G71GX, and we replaced it with a 500G unit. I spent 3 days tearing my hair out trying to troubleshoot "Unsigned Drivers" until I ran across this. Pulled the 500G HDD and put in a 320G and the system loaded up without issue. WHOOPEE!

Thank you David - your solution worked on my client's HP dv6 notebook. I had done a reinstall of Vista H.P. using Recovery Discs on a new HDD & couldn't install WinUpdates. Nothing else worked but your solution did!Wednesday, October 3, 2012 6:45 AM

I had a similar problem after replacing a hard drive in a laptop (Advent K6000). Turned out to be nothing simpler than installing Vista Service Pack 1 to resolve issues with the new Advanced Format drive.
I took a looooong route to get there though. I didn't realise the new Seagate drive was this new Advanced Format thing. I found this thread, tried drivers but nothing seemed to suit the laptop hardware. I initialliy restored Vista to a known working drive, let Windows Update do its thing then cloned the working drive to my new drive. Booted into Vista but WU didn't work. I just assumed SP1 would've been installed as part of the WU procedure so hadn't thought to install it separately. I only stumbled upon it whilst searching Microsoft's support pages and read about a Hotfix to address a problem with Advanced Format drives.

I can only hope you read this.
Thank you SOOOO much for this! I had bought a new bigger hard drive when my old one crashed, reinstalled windows and the drivers and was just tearing my hair out at why I couldn't update windows, much less install my virus protection program of choice (Microsoft Security Essentials), etc. I was also getting tons of errors in various places and was afraid to re-upload my files and do much online until I got this problem handled - took days of attempts and re-installs, etc. before I found your post.
Thanks for helping out - you saved me doubtlessly many more hours of heartache! :-D

Hi David,
I just wanted to sum up to legion of people thanking you. My problem was the same, Toshiba laptop for which I had changed the hard drive due to the old one breaking down. This was last year at around february-march... I look over the internet for over a week but couldn´t find a solution (or maybe it´s just that I didn´t look right). Today i just thought "hey let´s look again, who knows?" and came across your post.
I downloaded the driver you mentioned and my windows update is already up and running, installing like 122 updates. Thank you so much!!!!!

Hello David:
i had to say thanks to David and this community for his answer was the solution. I had not installed a new Hard drive but had to rebuild windows using the built in restore partition on a Toshiba laptop running Vista. Could not update. Still have issues with windows update crashing but I am ten steps forward instead of 20 back. Thank you very much David, You Rock!

Thank you so much for this answer! Our client requested we replace their failed 320 Gb HDD with a 2 Tb in their Dell XPS AiO. Hello David,
I have had to replace my hard drive as well, and was getting the same 8024A000 error when I tried using Windows update.
I installed the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, and didn't get the 8024A000 error anymore.
Thanks a lot!
You are a legend!

FANTASTIC! After a lot of pain, your answer solved this obscure issue. I obtained the driver from the Intel site to get the latest. Thank you. By way of background, my machine was a Dell Studio laptop 1555 running a fresh install of windows 7 and a fresh upgrade to Pro. I had just moved from a 500GB HDD to a 1 Terabyte disk.
I too have an obscure wifi problem at one particular location I go to and i'm guessing from one of the posts lower down here that this may well solve that intractable problem too.
This is a bit nuts because upgrading a HDD is relatively common so i cant believe more people don't have this issue.
Cheers

Your solution worked perfectly.

You're The Great!
I've copied all partitions from old, small and almost crashed disk on Toshiba Satellite to new bigger one.. First problem was not able to start Windows Mail on Vista Home Premium. After some bigger and smaller problems and weeks spent on looking for solution we - I and my Client - decided to restore system to factory settings. Hopefully I was able to do it from new - copied - disk. But, problems didn't finished!
Two days later I found your post and after half a minute everything went right!
Now I wonder if it could be possible to repair this copied environment without the need for system recovery... but it's to late now :(
Best wishes to You, I have a pleasure to be in company of such happy people, but your pleasure is - I think - more than quadruple as mine :)

This also worked for a desktop system, when I ran into the same problem after hdd failure and change of drive from 750gb to 1tb. Did have to install the Rapid Storage Technology Driver after every hardware change, i.e. USB3 expansion card, new video card, etc. but did allow Windows Update to run, after three days of frantically looking for an answer, and trying every step proposed by Microsoft several times over. Big thank you to David in Bishop. Vista still lives...

This seems to be working for all persons except me and one other person.
I have a HP s3750t on which I replaced the original harddrive from a 320GB to a 500GB and get this error (8024A000).
Although when I try to download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Intel website I get this error:
"The computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
What are the minimum requirements? Is it for a laptop?? (the info spec seems to suggest that. Also most of the responses seem to be from laptop users,)Everything I've experienced seems to point to the disc driver as the problem, but I am dead in the water unless I find the right one.
Any suggestions?

David,
Is it possible to get your assistance with this? It is driving me nuts. I have installed a 500 GB hard drive in place of a bad 320 GB hard drive in a Toshiba Satellite. It is running 64 bit Vista. I have received that 8024A000 error for 2 days. I have tried to install the new driver as you suggested but I cant get it installed correctly I think. I can't use the link above, it won't load correctly on the machine. I can't install any updates at all in Windows, I just keep getting the same old error. I tried to install the driver from the Intel site (Version 8.9) but I can't get it to fix the error. It just haunts me. Can you please offer any advice? Thank you!!!
