Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed

    Question

  • After my computer sits for some time without any activity, I return to it and I get the message "Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed.  A problem caused the application to stop working correctly.  Windows will notify when a solution is available."  I have been seeing this message almost daily since I got my new laptop and Windows Vista.  There is no meniton which program caused the "unknown window services" to shut down, and to date Windows has not offered any fixes.

Does anyone know what this problem is and what I might do to rectify it?  Most times I have to do a hard re-boot in order to get the system working correctly, as a soft boot or restart is unresponsive.

    Thanks

  • This started happening as soon as I upgraded to Vista too.  However it also happens sometimes when I close out of a program.  Any word on why this happens yet?

  • To date, Tony, I have heard nothing.  I am still experiencing this and yet nothing.  I also use Microsoft One Care, which is also a Microsoft product that is supposed to send reports back to Microsoft on problems.  However, I have heard nothing from anyone.  If and when I do, I will post it here.

  • I am experiencing this as well. VISTA has become a complete nightmare. I have had since March (came installed on my new latop) and I get blue screens several times a day and 99% of the time can not get the laptop to shut down properly.

Please notify me of any resolution to this problem.

  • I am having this problem as well, started on my new laptop after about one month. appears to hit ready boost, windows explorer, internet explorer or outlook. Have to restore back to an old checkpoint to get going again. Have you managed to get a solution to your problem?

    Cheers

  • I have heard that Vista Service Pack 1 will address some of these issues, especially those associated with shutting down and hibernation.   The service pack is currently in beta:

Windows Vista SP1 has been released as a limited beta to a group of selected beta testers. Technet subscribers will be the first to gain access to the SP1 release candidate when it becomes available. The timing of the release candidate will be based on feedback from the current beta testers.

SP1 will be an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 will also address some management, deployment, and support challenges.

The following resources provide information about what SP1 will contain, and about how to prepare for a service pack deployment.

I have an HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium and One Care and am getting this same error message.  It seems the Host Process crashes right after I open my laptop without putting it into Hibernate mode.  So it is the sleep mode that triggers the error message.  Is there a fix for this yet?  And is the Host Process important to PC health or security?  I suppose a reboot after it crashes would reset the Host Process.  Any information is appreciated.

  • I have been having the same problem for months, suspect it has something to do wiht USB (for various anecdotal reasons). Installed the Release Candidate SP1 for Vista and am getting the same error. So much for the long awaited SP1.

  • If a Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed, you should be able to find an entry with Application Name: SVCHOST.EXE in Problems Reports and Solutions.  Please follow the below below instructions and paste in the Problem Details for the svchost.exe entry on the released version of Vista and reply to this thread.

    1.  Open Problem Reports and Solutions by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Problem Reports and Solutions.

    2.  In the left pane, click View problem history.

    3.  Double-click the problem that you want to view.

    4.  Use the "Copy to clipboard" link in the lower left corner and paste into a reply to this thread.

  • Hello hondoa,

This crash occured in a popular operating system function (EnterCriticalSection) that is called often and thus could be due to numerous issues.  However, the cause of the problem can likely still be determined

    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

    Application Name: svchost.exe

    Application Version: 6.0.6000.16386

Take a look in your event log and see if you can locate a Service Stop error that corresponds to the same date and time of the failure and it should tell you the name of the service that failed.

    Service Stop Operations

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it is the Pml Driver HPZ12, but it really could be anything.  One of many ways to get a list of the services running on your computer is to run msconfig which let's you filter Microsoft services for other other services.

  • Hello Whgj,

The svchost.exe that hosts the Service "Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity" crashed on the machine inside the wcescommproxy.dll "WCESCOMM Proxy Provider" based on the timestamp of 4549bdc9 this was created On Wed Jan 24 14:23:37 2007.  The copy on my machine is dated Thu May 31 11:54:15 2007.  Not to say it will be resolved with the later version, but there is a later version of the Windows Mobile components.

My question is when does this occur?  I assume you are using a mobile device of some sort.  Does this occur when you plug in the device, or unplug the device?  Can you make it happen?  If, so what do you do?

    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

  • Hi Bill,

Can you do me a big favor and start another thread with this question?  This way we can avoid piling on to threads with unrelated questions and making it 20 pages long.  Unfortunately I missed the invididuals who started this thread with my answers and we haven't seen a response.

Additionally it would be great if you could right click on this problem and "Check for a solution" and copy and past the results again.   Also, can you take a look in the event logs on this machine and see if this problem occured around the time the machine was shutting down?  Or if you are logging logon/logoff events, did it occur when the machine was logging off?  To what extent is the problem occuring?  Just once? Every you time you log off/switch users?  (You'll be able to tell by reporting the problems and seeing if the bucket id's are the same.)

Looking forward to reading your answers on a new thread.

    Thanks,

  • Thomas,

Do you happen to have Nvidia Firewall installed on the machine such as Network Access Manager or ActiveArmor Firewall? If so, there will likely be a DLL called nvappfilter64.dll in c:\windows\system32 directory. As a
troubleshooting step, you could use Add/Remove programs to uninstall that program and see if it makes the problem go away. Please reply with your results an a NEW THREAD.  Even if it's not the exact problem, it's masking the real problem

There is a lot of discussion on the Nvidia site concerning the nvappfilter.dll

Although all of these appear to be the same because the title is the same, just as in music, you can have the same title, but a different tune.  As a matter of a fact, if the "Bucket ID" is different, then the it's pretty much a 99% chance it's a different problem.  I know it's easier to reply to an existing thread, but please create a new one.

If a Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed, you should be able to find an entry with Application Name: SVCHOST.EXE in Problems Reports and Solutions.  Please follow the below instructions and paste in the Problem Details for the svchost.exe entry on the released version of Vista and create a NEW THREAD.

    1.  Open Problem Reports and Solutions by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Problem Reports and Solutions.

    2.  In the left pane, click View problem history.

    3.  Right Click on the Problem and click "Check for New Solution".

    4.  If there is a solution, click "View Solution"

    3.  If there isn't a solution, Double-click the problem.

    4.  Use the "Copy to clipboard" link in the lower left corner and paste into a NEW THREAD.

Please start a new thread for every instance, this way we can avoid 50 pages of different problems.

I'm looking forward to reading new threads.

  • I am really hoping you can help!

I have had nothing but problems with Vista from the start, it was back in the shop after 4 days and has not perfomed properly since I have had it - I have been told to uninstall it and put windows 2000 in.  I am not able to type this properly and can not save docs & photos to disc as it has crashed.  Here are a few on the list of  errors I am not sure how serious or relevant they are - good luck!

  • Really Windows 2000.  I would go back and slap that guy up side the head.  He really wants you to install an OS that is 8 years old, and probably going to be dropped from support pretty soon?  If anything you should install Windows XP SP2.

  • Yeah... you are right, you know what well meaning work colleagues are like, that's what he has got and it has never let him down :-)

I have since spoken with someone that actually knows about computers and they also suggested XP.

(I would love to slap the guy... might get the sack though)

  • I have the same problem. I get the same message. My XPS 410 is extremely slow, starts and stops, and unexpectedly shuts down. It stops responding, and I have to do a hard re-boot to get the system to work again, even in the slow manner it performs. I'm frustrated.

The above has been happening for a year. When it happens, my wireless HP printer stops working and I have to uninstall it and then reinstall it. The HP device works on printing and when the problem arises it does not work on scanning. Any clues?

  • Here is how I resolved it.

My laptop came with a trial of Norton antivirus, which I uninstalled. I use AVG free. A friend told me that when you use the microsoft uninstall utility, not all the Norton software is removed. I went to the Norton site and did a search on uninstall. They provide a utility to uninstall ALL the software which I downloaded and ran. I have not received the Host Process for windows...... error message since.

    This works....

    Monday, April 14, 2008 11:32 PM
  • Uninstalling Norton has worked.  Ever since I cleaned it out of my system, I have had no problems.

    Tuesday, April 15, 2008 12:03 AM
  • I Have been told it is everything from Norton to a rogue version of Vista... so I have wiped the hard drive and re-installed Vista and as soon as I am able I will install XP in it's place.  I have been told that version 7 of itunes does not like Vista ... well... join the club !

  • This is my problem, essentially. I originally had Vista Home Premium, then upgraded to Ultimate. Any time I select a Dreamscape background this error message pops up continually. It doesn't seem to affect much of anything else...just annoying. I will get the necessary information when I get back home to my laptop.

  • Everyone of these issues are different and it would be best to start new threads.  Trying to look at 50 different problems over multiple pages is difficult.  The "new thread" button is on the very bottom left corner of the web page.

For the specific problem Application Name: svchost.exe_HPSLPSVC Exception Offset: 000410c9

This problem is caused by an HP Printer Service program.  Please work with HP to resolve this problem because it's an HP DLL.  The only suggestion I can make is to upgrade the printer software and maybe it doesn't happen in a newer version.  If you find a solution, please post back here or e-mail me and we can make sure everyone gets the solution.

I really don't know what the purpose of gp.ocx but it is not essential to running Internet Explorer and if it was on my machine, I would troubleshoot the problem by removing it.

  • Today I uninstalled Bitdefender Internet Security 2008 and the "Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed" stopped.

I downloaded the new installer from Bitdefender, did a new installation and in the installation-process, there's a system scan. Within the system scan there was an error "Bitdefender Threat Scanner Crashed" and directly after this I got the "Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed".

IMHO, at least at my system, Bitdefender causes the Host Process crash.

    Any ideas?

I also have Bitdefender Internet Security 2008 and found the same issue (when uninstalled, everything is fine; when installed it stuffs up in that same manner).  I've contacted Bitdefender but they haven't had a decent response to me yet.

  • Here's my version. Didn't start happening until the most recent update by MS. Bought this system new this March; no problem with downloading SP1 recently. Just the upgrade that came earlier this last week, and suddenly I have this nagging error showing up all the time, now. And for no apparent reason.

  • Sorry for not being able to share any solution since I have similar problem. Being in the IT industry since 16 years out of which 6 years in Microsoft I found the message is very usefull. It is saying the application (in technical terms the process) that is in charge of managing the other services (in other words also processes) stoped working and was closed after stopped working. I wonder how can Windows run without that process.

It seems the bug is not in the processes itself but in the message itself. After 16 years I am used to such messages and you may get used yourself after a while.

I run my Mac Book Air when I want to take a break from error messages since you can not yet live without a PC.

    Regards.

  • Microsoft is just as bad as the Wall Street robbbers.  They put-out garbage, expect you to buy it, and then they run and hide when the stuff hits the fan.  Unfortunately, the business apps I need to run only "do" Windows.  If that was not the case, I'd be outta here.

  • Did you ever get an answer for this?

  • My scenario is that I bought a new HP Pavilion laptop and within 6 months I started having this error come up every time I do a cold boot of the laptop! The window initializes minimized on my taskbar. Closing the window does not seem to cause problems, but it is annoying - and I do have a few other quircks from time to time that may be being cause by this - I don't know.

Anyway, I would certainly appreciate your thoughts?

  • Just started today for me, and it's happening when my computer sits idle.  I've had this system about 4 months now...numerous issues with Vista.  This one is minor, but very annoying.  Also running Vista on my laptop, which is almost a year old.  All of a sudden it has become slow or impossible to shut down.  I'm thinking this has to be caused by a recent Vista update.  Sure wish I knew exacty what is shutting down.

Try running SFC /SCANNOW that finds and fixes all sort of System File Corruption in OS.

    1.       Click on Start (Pearl)

    2.       Click on All Programs

    3.       Click on Accessories

    4.       Right click on Command Prompt

    5.       Click on Run as Administrator (It will open the black Command Prompt window)

    6.       Type the command: SFC /SCANNOW

    7.       Press the ENTER key.

This scan might take some time to finish.

    Hi

I've had Windows Vista for about a year and it hasn't given me any problems until now. I've recently been getting the error "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed." Now I've read most of this thread but I'm in a bit of a pickle because for some reason after this error popped up, my computer can no longer access the internet. I have one of those usb things that you plug into your computer to get internet access. Bascially I think I'm screwed if I can't get on the interent on my computer but was wondering if there was some way I could get the internet to work again?

If this is the wrong thread to ask this, please point me in the right direction. I'm totally lost.

    Thanks

  • This thread is too long.  If new threads are created for every Application Name/Bucket ID, I can sift through them easier.

    In response to HEBIII

Application anme: svchost.exe_hpslpsvc bucket ID: 157855348

The first step you can take is isolate the HP Network Devices Support service into it's own svchost.  Right now when the HP service crashes it's affecting your entire machine, if it's isolated, it will just restart and not be so serious.  If there is an update for this component from HP, I'd recommend installing that as well.

Start / All Programs / Right Click on Command Prompt / Run as Administrator

At the command prompt type the following command:

    sc config hpslpsvc type=  own

    Restart the Machine

    I hope tihs helps,

  • I just got a powerful Dell with Vista (64 bit).  I also have this same problem occurring.  However, the one distinguishing facot is that after I notice this has occurred, my HP 6180 All-In-One is gone from my list of computers and the software HP Solution Center has the following message if I try to open it: "No HP devices have been detected.  HP Solution Center will now close."  What I have been doign is to totally uninstall all of the HP software and re-install the HP software again, then recognize the All-In-One and add it as a new printer.  All will work fine and then for reasons unknown to me, I will get the error: "Host Process For Windows Services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

  • I uninstalled Bonjour, but the error did not go away.  Here is my most recent error (I get at least 3 each time I restart my computer; normally after getting the error my start bar will revert to classic temporarily then go back to Vista.  Recently, if the internet (FireFox) is open when an error occurs the screen will "shake" - it scrolls slightly up and down constantly until I close out and go back on.)

Just throw in my 2penny worth.Rundll32 stops working at startup does'nt seem to affect my computer too much so i just live with it,would be nice to have a solution though.
I am running a OEM version of Vista Home Premium 32bit SP2 RC.Looking at the above fault module NvCpl.dll i would presume something to do with Nvidia or something.
Don't want to replace drivers though as it took me a while to get the perfect (Lol) setup for my system

  • It affects me, it happens whenever it wants, I've searched the internet and there are a lot of solutions, but I don't know which one to do, it affects me because I use Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit and I have the sound scheme: Ultimate Extras Pearls and when you minimize a window or maximize it a sound is heard with this scheme and after the error of the Host Process for Windows Services comes up the sound scheme doesn't seem to work and when I restart my laptop everything seems back to normal, but I'm finding this very frustrating. I've e-mailed Microsoft about this issue with even an event log of the error & they've replied with microsoft technical sites support like forums ect. I think the best solution is that they would make a patch with a new svchost.exe file more stable.
    Part 2:
However I've found an interesting site about the issue which says to open the Task Shededuler and disable the RAC Agent, But I'm afraid that if I disable it I might make things worse. I hope that with this piece of info, I might be helpful to many, and please reply if someone finds it so and how it affected him/her and if that error came up again. Thanks guys.

About 2 months ago I've found a software on the net registry booster, and the company which created it says that after some time, the registry files can get corrupted and the error comes up. with the software everything comes back to normal. I don't know what happens afterwards but I haven't read a bad comment about it, I didn't install it becuase i think that messing with registry files, isn't ideal, I don't know. I've also read that this is common on XP. But I've never read that the error messes up the PC or Windows so there's nothing to worry that lot about, but still and can make you crazy becuase you'd have to restart the PC. However, if anyone is using nero I suggest renaming some files, check on the net write nero service host process, and there should be something but I forgot, it's about renaming some nero files.
and I've also read that disabling the RAC agent may solve it, But i haven't tried it yet. this is where it its Task Scheduler - Microsoft - Windows - RAC - view Hidden - RAC Agent - disable
first you have to open the task sheduler.
I've only tried the nero thing.

  • if there's a Microsoft tech reading this, Ive read that the error comes up because after sometime, windows files gets corrupted maybe microsoft can create a backup of the registry files, and then program it that when a registry error comes up, the program checks the registy files and see which are corrupted then restores them back to their original state.

  • One thing is for sure, the BEX and BEX64 indicated a Buffer overflow (Data Execution Prevention).

But not caused by a virus or malware. My system is clean and I believe yours too.

  • I have also been getting lots of applications and SVCHost crashes on Vista Ultimate.
I checked the RAM, Viruses, Malware etc, ALL clean.
After browsing various forums, a suggestion was to disable the superfetch process.
I have done this, and the PC has now been on and running for 2days with no crashes or errors.

Typical applications that were crashing and causing reboot BSOD's etc.
    Media Player
    Explorer
    IE7
    BITLocker
    Avast
    Live Mail
    Media Creator
    MSN Messenger
    Adobe

Similar to ALL the errors in above posts.
Interseted to see if it helps others.

  • Once in a while, Windows Vista may pop up an error message that says “Host Process for Windows Services Has Stopped Working”, which normally has problem details point to svchost.exe application and fault module name of rasmans.dll_unloaded. The error also appears occasionally and intermittently in Windows 7, or start occurring suddenly, experienced by early testers who manage to download Windows 7 pre-beta build and install on their system for normal usage.

The exact cause for the “Host Process for Windows Services Has Stopped Working” error to happen is unknown, however, there is a workaround fix to stop the error from ever appearing again.

To fix the Host Process for Windows Services Has Stopped Working error, follow these steps:
    1. Open up Task Scheduler.
    2. Expand and go to Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> RAC.
    3. Click on View menu, and then enable Show Hidden Tasks (so that a tick appear beside it).
    4. Right click on RACAgent (Windows Vista) or RACTask (Windows 7), and select Disable so that the status appears as Disabled.

  • My new Dell XPS Studio with Vista Ultimate 64bit has recently started to come up with "problem reports and solutions has stopped working" and this always occurs when the PC has been idle.

The message can leave up to ten dialog boxes open all with same message and one on top of another...

I have tried SFC /SCANNOW which found errors but failed to fix them, and Ive also disabled the RACAgent as previous post.

If I try to open Problem Reports in control panel, I get the error message "This application has failed to start because wercplsupport.dll was not found..."

    Any suggestions ?

  • WPecker,
I suggest that you scan your PC with an antivirus, one which has a good reputation. If nothing results from that, did you install a new driver for your graphic card, which is beta? Becuase when there's a beta version there's always the warning that some status of the PC like hibernate, sleep among others are not supported. But that's one possibility. Or you installed an update for windows or for a software, if you did that, do a system restore just before that update, and see what happens. If all that doesn't work, leave another reply.

  • WPecker,
I suggest that first you scan your PC for malware, preferably with a good anti-virus. Did you install a new beta driver for your graphic card? Becuase beta drivers usually don't support some windows status like hibernation, sleep among others. Or did you install a new update, for windows or a software in the last few days? If you did that I reccomend that you do a system restore, before that update. Try to open the event viewer it also shows problems if I'm not mistaken. If none of my suggestions work, reply.

  • Will do.

Im running McAfee and also run MRT monthly.

Only issues Ive had are the LifeCam that has been playing up, but Im going to remove that (funnly also have unlrelated issues on another Vista PC with lifecam), but I dont think that is the cause.

Im working tomorrow and Monday so wont get much done until the middle of the week.

    Cheers.

  • I ran MRT (full scan) and also a full scan on McAfee, both clear.

With no normal programs running (ie nothing in task manager) the error still appears.  Windows Indexing and also Media Centre also appeard in same fashion (ie .... has stopped working and will be closed etc).

My workaround is to stop problem reporting service, which has in turn  stopped the error appearing but not actually fixed the problem.

Having first 24 hour free period of no error messages for about 5 weeks....

There is a RAID issue as well at the moment, DELL say the two are unrelated but Ill see if when they fix this problem and I start the service again.

  • Danah A,
I agree with you, Service Pack 2 seems to solve the Host Process problem, but I didn't change anything. I installed the Service Pack 2 like a week ago, and no error has come up till now. Let's hope for the best.

WPecker, it could be something with your hardware maybe a corrupted driver or something like that. I suggest that you should check your recent installations both updates and softwares. Can you tell me what the error is, (from event viewer- Click Start then type Event Viewer and it should come up and find the most  recent warning or error and Copy & paste the info here). Do you use Nero? becuase the service host problem could also be related to it sometimes. If yes tell me, I have a link to tell you what to do. I tried it but didn't work but it may work for you, don't know. If a service stops, see what it is, then press CTRL + ALT + DELETE altogether, open the task manager, click on the services tab, click on the button "Services..." it is with that system administrator/security pic accept the administrator warning as always if you're not logged as administrator then a window with all the services process comes up, find the one which brought about the error, if it is stopped click on it, and then click on restart or start, or do a right click on it and click on restart or start from there. It shall turn on the service.

I also suggest that you run your Anti-Virus scan every week not once a month.

  • This has happened at work recently, I looked through this thread to see if there was anything I could to to fix the problem however I couldnt even get on the computer as it kept restarting itself.

The computer had 2GB memory - I removed 1Gb of memory and ran the computer and it worked fine, with one error message when it loaded it.  I then swapped the memory to the other 1Gb and the computer just wouldnt load. So I replaced the memory and so far its working fine.

Not sure if this will help anyone but I thought it would be usefull.

  • To Laura B, This error of the host process doesn't seem to shut down or restart any computers, I think that your problem is with the RAM, I suggest that you change your RAM, and if you're using Vista it is also suggested to use 2GB ram or more.

  • I have a Dell Studio 1535 laptop, Vista Home Premium x64, and have been dealing with this problem for a couple of months now. Cascade of error events, which lead to superfetch and sometimes host process for windows shutting down, screen flickers, cursor flickers, my WIFI going haywire.   This seemed to be connected to the SP2 install failure, so I tried this fix - http://www.error0x800f0826.com/ and reinstalled SP2.  The reinstal worked, and it stopped the flickers and error messages, but I now see that the errors continued and am again getting error messages about them.  ARGH.  Dell doesn't seem to know what is going on, nor does Microsoft -- and yet this error is ALL OVER THE WEB.  So many people have this error -- what's going on?  Ghost in the machine/software?

Please, Microsoft -- any ideas on what causes this?

    Thanks!

  • I got fed up looking to cure the problem, so just stopped the service and set it to manual, no more silly notifications, and no differences to user experience (apart from not having to close  the message when I get back to my PC).

All in all my new DELL studio has been a bit of a lemon, it also keeps coming up with RAID errors, I think Ill just retire this one early and get something else which is a shame as this one is only five months old, oops thats another story..

As I advance in age, I now look to get rid of the problems as opposed to looking for the symptoms, I know this may not be the way that all of you on this forum work, but life is just too short, and Ill be getting a new computer inside 12 months so, just stop the service and get on with the rest of your life...

    4.  Use the "Copy to clipboard" link in the lower left corner and paste into a reply to this thread.

this is the report I found in my solutions in the control panel. I have the same problem displayed here, my host keeps going down and closing, but I don't see the same problems yet that everyone else has. I am at the present a student at Phoenix College in the IT and have about eight more months to go in classes. I am taking courses for programming. I will continue to look for a solution to this problem and see what I can find. Thanks for all the help, will do what I can on this situation.

  • To sunfamily,

it seems that your problem is from something which you have installed. When did this error start to appear? & before that time, could be a week, more or less, what did you install?
Becuase most probably the problem could be coming from that software which you installed during that time. An Ad-aware GUI seems something which has something to do with the User interface, the looks of Windows ect. I suggest you uninstall the software and see what happens. That's why the windows explorer crashes quite often. After you do that, I suggest you to install the vista service pack 2, if you are using vista.

    Thanks

In further research of this problem, I found a site that offers (if not a cure then a workaround).
    That site is:

    http://forums.techarena.in/tips-tweaks/1092007.htm

I just followed the instructions.  Will have to wait and see if it truly works, but sounds good.
