Booting Windows 7 from dynamic disk
Question
-
Hi all !
Could anybody give me advice what is it a proper way to make Windows 7 be bootable from any partition of software RAID-1
which has been created with standard procedure: My Computer->Management->Disk Management->Create Mirror Volume ...e.t.c. ?
As a result i have following. My disk C is really being mirrored, in my VmWare server console i see that both th disks are triggered
during any disk operation, but when the first disk has disconnected (In VmWare with Remove Device) startup process failed just after POST
and i see blinking cursor only. As per me it's obvious to expect that if i have made my system volume mirrored i would be able to boot from the copy
if source disk doesn't work. But the practice shos that i'm not right.
Please advice me how to make second disk containing the second part of my RAID-1 bootable ?
Thx for advice.Wednesday, August 12, 2009 4:21 PM

To my knowledge, neither Windows Vista or Windows 7 can be installed on a dynamic disk - basic disks only.
Please see: You cannot select or format a hard disk partition when you try to install Windows Vista

According to this you can: (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927520)
1. For a dynamic disk that has a simple volume, use the Diskpart.exe utility to configure the disk as an active disk. For more information about how to use the Diskpart.exe utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:300415 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415/ ) A description of the Diskpart.exe command-line utility
It goes on to say that a FAT patition has to be reformatted with NTFS.- Marked as answer by Nicholas Li Friday, August 21, 2009 2:17 AM
