Cannot boot Win7 from VHD

    Question

  • I am using Windows 7 RTM on my computer. I wanted to use the native vhd support and install a second copy of Win7 in a vhd. I made the vhd by using the wim2vhd tool, the settings were the following: fixed disk size (35 GB) and sku: ultimate. After my vhd had been made I set bcdedit to boot from this disk (bcdedit /set {guid} device vhd=[C:]\win7.vhd and detecthal on), then restarted my computer. Instead of bubble animation boot of Win 7 I got the "old" Vista boot logo and then I got BSOD with 0x0000012F error code. I tried many other ways like using dynamically expanding disk or file=[C:]\win7.vhd parameter against vhd="...", but they have done nothing to this.

  • I have resolved the problem! The cause of the problem was the dynamic disk format. I had to convert it to basic and then native boot worked fine.
