Cannot get Start Layout File to apply correctly RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been struggling with this for a few days now, I have been following the guide mostly from this page:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuration/configure-windows-10-taskbar

    I can apply an xml that sets the start menu to remove all tiles and I can apply the "Remove default apps and add your own" xml to edit the pinned taskbar items if I use the file directly from that page.  However the "sample taskbar configuration added to start menu xml file does not work.  I seem to be able to customise the start menu OR the task bar but not both.  As soon as I try the whole file is ignored.

    I have also not been able to work out the correct line to add Outlook 2019 to the pinned taskbar items.  According to my exported file it should be:

    <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Outlook.lnk" />

    But that does not work.

    Here is an example of what I'm trying to set both the start menu and taskbar:

    <LayoutModificationTemplate
        xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification"
        xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout"
        xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout"
        xmlns:taskbar="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/TaskbarLayout"
        Version="1">
      <LayoutOptions StartTileGroupCellWidth="6" StartTileGroupsColumnCount="1" />
      <DefaultLayoutOverride>
        <StartLayoutCollection>
          <defaultlayout:StartLayout GroupCellWidth="6" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout">
            <start:Group Name="Life at a glance" xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout">
              <start:Tile Size="2x2" Column="0" Row="0" AppUserModelID="Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe!MicrosoftEdge" />
              <start:Tile Size="2x2" Column="4" Row="0" AppUserModelID="Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI" />
              <start:Tile Size="2x2" Column="2" Row="0" AppUserModelID="Microsoft.BingWeather_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App" />
            </start:Group>
          </defaultlayout:StartLayout>
        </StartLayoutCollection>

      </DefaultLayoutOverride>
    <CustomTaskbarLayoutCollection PinListPlacement="Replace">
        <defaultlayout:TaskbarLayout>
          <taskbar:TaskbarPinList>
            <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath=DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools\File Explorer.lnk" />
            <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Internet Explorer.lnk"/>
            <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Outlook.lnk"/>
          </taskbar:TaskbarPinList>
        </defaultlayout:TaskbarLayout>
      </CustomTaskbarLayoutCollection>
    </LayoutModificationTemplate>

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for your reply, apologies for the late reply!  I was writing my reply on Friday but kept trying new things out and needing to change it!

    I did use the example in the link you sent and after a lot of trial and error I have got it working as I wanted.  I still think I have a lot to understand about how this xml file works... I think perhaps one problem I had not considered is that according to the MS site white space and extra lines can stop it working.

    In case it helps anyone my final files to replace the default taskbar pins with File Explorer, Intertnet Explorer and Outlook 2019 and make the start menu just the one column looks like this:

    <LayoutModificationTemplate
        xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification"
        xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout"
        xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout"
        xmlns:taskbar="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/TaskbarLayout"
        Version="1">
     <LayoutOptions StartTileGroupsColumnCount="1" />
     <DefaultLayoutOverride>
        <StartLayoutCollection>
          <defaultlayout:StartLayout GroupCellWidth="6" />
        </StartLayoutCollection>
      </DefaultLayoutOverride>
      <CustomTaskbarLayoutCollection PinListPlacement="Replace">
     <defaultlayout:TaskbarLayout>
      <taskbar:TaskbarPinList xmlns:taskbar="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/TaskbarLayout">
       <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools\File Explorer.lnk" />
       <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Internet Explorer.lnk"/>
       <taskbar:DesktopApp DesktopApplicationLinkPath="%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Outlook.lnk" />
      </taskbar:TaskbarPinList>
     </defaultlayout:TaskbarLayout>
     </CustomTaskbarLayoutCollection>
    </LayoutModificationTemplate>
