APPCRASH windows explorer Please help me??

    Question

  • Hi, please read and try to help me if you can - i have been searching google and the forums all day and just cant find a fix for this.  From reading lots of other threads I thought this may be a Spylocked problem but on my error report there is not a .dll ?   The problem has only started since I installed Utorrent software. I have since uninstalled it an removed but i still get this problem.

Whenever i try to play a disc from my drive, CDR or anything, it trys to open the files and then a few seconds later i get the message that windows have stopped working... I just cannot access anything through the disc drive now.....  Ive ran Norton and Windows defender. Ive searched for the spylocked.exe file and nothing.... Ive also been trying to locate the mpeg2dmx.ax file but cannot find it........

Please try to advise what i should do - im totally stressed out......

  • Would it be a hardware problem? I would suggest to replace the drive and test.

  • First off, thanks for the reply, its always appreciated when somebody you dont even know trys to help you!

Since my original post I have been diagnosing further so what happens now is this....

The drive WILL NOT read data CDR (it did before but not anymore)

It WILL do other things, read DVD, play DVD, burn audio CD, burn Data CD burn DVD.. it just wont read the data CDR anymore, I have found a work around, ie I am using a memory stick or Data DVD to transfer stuff onto it but its still a mystery...

It was working ok but then it stopped. but only when i try to access a data CDR....

Ive tried a couple of brands of disc so its not that, just a bit of a mystery eh.....

  • Richard,

Just an update, its working again so im gonna mark this thread as answered.....

Like you said, its suddenly working again now.... Didnt work for a while but after leaving it a while i just checked a data CDR today (the same one that wouldnt work before) and it worked fine - very strange problem.

I did not want to go updating firmware etc as im not quite sure what im doing and as it worked before I dont thinkit would be related to a firmware issue.... Must be a bug or something....

Anyway, thanks for replies, much appreciated,

    Best Regards

  • Seem your problem is difference, your crashing application is iexplorer NOT explorer.

I think your IE is getting some problem. THe file is mshtml.dll. Please try to un-install all add-ons in your IE.

  • Hello,

I have the same problems but mine are more severe.
    I get ntdll.dll APPCRASH's for Firefox/Thunderbird/Windows Media Player
and on top of that my internet doesn't work anymore. It also seems like
any program I uses which needs some kind of internet connection gets
an APPCRASH in the ntdll.dll module.

Is this a hardware related thing? I have an AMD processor.

Here's another twist. This error comes up every time I open up my Documents folder. It just started happening out of the blue. I have Norton360 and Windows Defender running, but these were running/installed long before this problem started. I've tried restarting my computer, but I am still not able to get back into the Documents folder. Any ideas on fixing this?

  • Try from cmd (Run as administrator) sfc /scannow

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228/en-us

    Maybe this will help.

  • Or

Try from cmd (Run as administrator) regsvr32 -u mpeg2dmx.ax (this unregistrate)

    For more info regsvr32 /?

    Maybe this will help.

  •

I was having the same APPCRASH problem and it bothered me until I stopped using IE7 altogether and switched to another browser for a few months now.  I would get the error when I shut down IE when a opened new pop-up windows.

Tonight I decided to really investigate this issue to resolve it and was successful.  After reading all the posts here I decided to follow the suggestion to "Disable" all Add-ons in my IE7 list then open and close IE7 over and over again and the problem vanished. Then I new it was an Add-on causing "my" issue so I added one Add-on at a time shutting down IE7 and opening it again after each Enabled Add-on until I found the one that caused the problem.  I then "Enabled" all other Add-ons in my list and tested a few more times to verify that there weren't anymore Add-ons causing the problem.

What were the Add-ons you say?

1.) Go to TOOLS then MANAGE ADDONS THEN ENABLE OR DISABLE ADDONS.

2.) Look in your list for the 2 Add-ons listed below and disable them (for some reason it won't let me delete them).

    • Yahoo! IE Services Button
    • Yahoo! Services

3.) Now shut down IE7 (you may still get the error because the addons are still running until you shut down).

4.) Re-open IE and then shut it down again to see if you get the APPCRASH error.

NOTE: If you still get the APPCRASH error after disabling the 2 above then "your" issue may be with a different Addon. Do what I did by disabling all the Add-ons and adding them back one by one (shuting down and re-opening IE7 after each enabled Add-on) until you location your demon.

    Hope this helps someone.

  • im having similar problems myself, but it's shot down my internet access so i cant look for solutions online from my desktop. i get the following problem signitures 'IP Helper Not Functioning' (or something similar); 'Net Connections has stopped working' and 'WLAN Autoconfig has stopped working'.

when i view the problem this appears:

    Problem Event Name APPCRASH

    Application Name svchost.exe_iphlpsvc

    Application Version 6.0.6000.16386

    Application Timestamp 4549adc4

    Additional Information 3 46a9

    Additional Information 4 3304a891e4dfe29a2b5c5df011bc66

if anyone could help advise me on this i'd be damn grateful! it may be relevant to mention that i had a virus on my PC about a month ago. i managed to clear all of it up (seemingly) but it may have resurfaced and be the core to this problem.

my desktop also often disappears as well, but after i swtich my desktop on and back on again, it usually reappears.

  • here is one solution:

restart your computer and press f8 untill the screen for safe mode appears.do not hold f8,you must press it the whole time.
then when the safe mode screen appears select safe mode with command prompt.the window appears and you type the following commads:

    cd..
    cd..
    cd program files
    cd k-lite codec pack
    cd filters
    rename mpeg2dmx.ax lite

*you must type the commands with all the spaces just like I typed here above.

then restart the computer and everything should be fixed !

if you have a problem like this one and the name of the foult module is not the same like in this case you  type the same commands but put in the last command: rename (type the foult module name that appears in your case) (put anything you want but not the same name Smile)

    thats all.bye

  • I HAVE A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO ALL THE PEOPLE!!!

If your APPCRASH happened in a program other than explorer

Open your program in compatibility mode for windows XP. Here are the steps to do this.

    1. Right click on the program you are having problems with

    2. Select "Compatibility" (at the top of the window)

    3. Select "Run this progam in compatibility mode for:"

    4. Select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" (if not already selected for you)

    THIS MAY FIX THE PROBLEM.

If your APPCRASH happened in explorer

End the process for windows explorer, Then restart the process. Here are the steps to do this

    1. Press "Ctrl Alt Del"

    2. Select "Start Tack Manager" (You can also start the task manager by going "start", "run", typing "taskmgr.exe", and clicking "OK")

    3. Select "Processes" (At the top of the window)

    4. Click "explorer.exe"

    5. Select "End Process"

    6. A pop-up window will come up. Select "End Process"

    7. Select "Applications" (At the top of the window)

    8. Select "New Task..."

    9. Type "explorer.exe"

    10. Select "OK"

    THIS MAY FIX THE PROBLEM.

I'm only guessing here, and b'cuz I'm having the EXACT same problem with a variety of applications running on a clean install (updated or not) in Windows 7 Ult.. That guess is:  Does everyone on here have a "cracked" or downloaded (unlicensed) un-purchased copy of Windows Vista or Windows 7?

Only answer if U can be HONEST. B'cuz, the cracked copies of these versions are missing certain dll's and also may have intentionally "corrupted" files put there by ...well...whom really knows, maybe Mr. Gates as I'm sure he's not too thrilled that 50 million or so of these copies are being used Globally. Check that, if my stats are correct.

Either way, and I say all this as my OPINION ONLY, that the problem primarily seems to exist in cracked copies or downloaded cracked softwares, being used on these versions of Windows. My other 'guess' is that nearly as soon as someone created a hack/key for all these versions, the highly capable folks at Microsoft's 'anti-piracy' team(s) probably downloaded copies, slipstreamed some bad dll's (or other crappy corrupted files) into these "cracked" versions and uploaded them for 50 million users to become frustrated (as they @ MS sit back and laugh), hoping everyone realizes whats up! and finally BUYS a licensed copy.  Now, this is all my opinion, and yes I know what I can do with my opinions, so save the criticisms.

If anyone has a better answer I would love to read it! B'cuz so far, even if you GOOGLE this APPCRASH until your fingers & eyes hurt, there's NO FIX! Lots of software folks taking advantage of ppl over it, selling alleged repair apps etc, (Maybe they realize what my opinion concludes also)???

The suggestions target the System Properties' Data Execution Prevention tool, but it DOES NOT WORK!  However, if you reverse your viewpoint and look at all the stuff Microsoft's done to cause havoc on pirated software, you soon start to wonder if (like my opinion) Big Daddy Microsoft has tricked us all. All of us that are being honest and using a pirated copy of Windows that is. If there's someone out there having this APPCRASH problem on a legit copy, well....call me wrong, call me anything U want, my apologies offered. But if I'm correct, then these pirated copies are JUNK!

Please feel free to comment. Thank you. By the way, I am BEYOND frustrated with this APPCRASH, and I'm a pretty capable programmer. And I say, MS has thrown a perverbial "wrench into our machines"!

    All the best.....

  • I have a genuine copy - same old shit. Microsoft don't give a toss, they've moved on to 8 & 9 and support (if it EVER existed) was at best mediocre. They don't do fixes anymore, they just abandon their substandard platforms to the forums, sometimes you get lucky, but most times you have to live with aggravating shit.. eg every time I reboot, I have to resize EVERY window, since WIN7 won't remember my maximise everything setting...
