Windows 10 Upgrade from home to pro RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

Could you please help me with an issue: I have Windows 10 Home premium which came as free upgrade of previously licensed Windows 7 Home Premium. Now I want to upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro. When I try to enter product key from windows 10 pro, it says "The product key you entered can't be used to activate this version of Windows".

As I understood, this comes because Windows 10 doesn't have product key but have what they call Digital entitlement.

So is there anyway I can upgrade it to Win 10 without clean installation?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Timur,

What is your current situation? Have you tried the methods mentioned by the others here?

To upgrade to Windows 10 pro, we may go to:

Settings->Update and security->Activation, then click on the Go to Store.

Then Windows 10 pro would be available there.

For the other way, we may consider download the proper install Media and then perform an upgrade install to

    keep the files and settings.

    Regards

  • some background information: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows-10/activation-in-windows-10

    or you can try: C:\Windows\System32\changepk.exe

  • Purchased it separately as OEM product key but seller made me sure it will work as upgrade. There is no error code, just the "The product key you entered can't be used to activate this version of Windows" message.

  • Than you Don,

I've red this article but it didn't help me. Will try changepk.exe later on.

Assuming the Pro key you purchased is genuine...............

Start button > Settings > Update & Security > left side, click Activation > right side, click Change product key > enter the generic Win 10 Pro product key ...............
    VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

That will start changing to Pro version but will NOT activate.

After the change is completed, use your purchased Pro key to activate.

  • Hi David,

  • Why later on ?

Why leave the Win 10 Pro not activated ?
