Black Screen during Boot

    Question

  •

My situation is like this. I have recently installed SP3 RC2 on my Latitude D620. I made sure it was fully updated before installing SP3. Once it was installed i would try to boot and it would progress through the splash screen and then stop at a black screen. No HD activity. I can boot in all safe modes. It has booted before but now it does not want to. I have restored back to an earlier point that it was working and still no avail. I can uninstall SP3 and it works fine except that my admin tools like Active directory snap ins do not work. Any help would be appreciated. I beleive it has to do with the video driver but i cant pin point for sure?

  • I enabled add/remove programs now in safe mode and removed Symantec. It now boots fine. My only problem now is that the Symantec AV is pushed by corporate. I guess i will have to look and see if there is a fix for SP3 and Symantec

  • Can you please let us know the anti-virus software you are using?

Would it be possible to connect a kernel debugger to the system? You would need another machine, that has a 1394 port and a 1394 debugging cable.

    Thanks

  • The Av i am running is Symantec AV version 10.1.4.4000 scan engine 71.4.0.15. As for the debugging cable i would have to check my inventory to see if i have one. What exactly is a debugging cable is it 1394 on both sides. My laptop does not have firewire capablities.

  • If the laptop does not have firewire capabilites, then I guess you may not be able to provide us with this info.

Would it be possible for you to uninstall Synmantec AV and try?

    Thanks

It wont let me unistall in safe mode. Is there a way to boot normally but with only the basic video drivers? Or is there a trick to letting my uninstall in safe mode.

  • Hi,

We would be taking a change in SP3 to ensure this condition does not arise. However, at the same time, the new version of Symantec also seems to fix the issue.

    Thanks

  • Will this issue also effect RC2 Build 3311 or has Build 3311 already resolve it?

  • This issue does effect 3311 build

  • I had same problem with 3311 build, b/c didn't try AV to update or reinstall but uninstalling SP3 3311 build will fix

  • I'm having the exact same problem with windows 7 RC1, not using symantec though I use Kaspersky 2009

    ****************************************************

    windows 7 RC1
    lenovo t500
major display issues, whenever windows auto updates my display drivers crash, I was able to fix this 2x after 2-3 hour sessions of uninstalling/re-installing video drivers using mobility modder but thats not even working now.

Hardware is fine, if I remove ATI Radeon 3650 and intel chipset mobile 4 series express from under display adapters in Device Manager, I can restart windows normally but then the update feature automatically re-inserts the same bad video drivers.  If I prevent this from happening I can get 1200x800 resolution but something is wrong with video display.  When I hover open programs in the toolbar I don't get the visual window anymore, I just get a textual description and when I try to play a video, its pixelated, choppy and the voice and audio tracks don't work right

I downloaded the windows 7 version of the ATI driver from lenovo website (ATI Display Driver for Windows 7 32bit and 64bit) and the latest version of the Intel mobile chipset for graphics acceleration.

When I boot up after the windows flag loads I get a black screen and all I can see is the cursor.

    sleep & hibernate unavailable

This is extremely frusturatinsg if anybody can help I'd appreciate it.
