Windows Assessment and Deployment Toolkit as an alternative to Ghost? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are considering using the Windows Assessment and Deployment Toolkit to replace Symantec Ghost, as Ghost is having problems capturing and deploying Windows 10 images we have built.  Is that product being kept up to date?  Is it 100% compatible with Windows 10 version 1903?

Secondly, is it easy enough to use for technical people that have never used it before?  Is there some kind of guided instruction/walkthrough that would cut through all the excess and just help you simply take a Windows 10 computer that you have built from scratch, make an image of it that can be saved somewhere else (USB drive; file server), and then copy that image to another computer?  With the end result being two computers with the same exact installation of Windows 10 (same OS, same settings, same users).  The only thing that would be different would be the computer name and the IP address.

  • From the ADK, you can create a WinPE disk. DISM.EXE utility in the WinPE disk and Windwos 10 in general, supports capture full disk images. Here is a paper that discusses the process: DISM + FFU Capture and Restore an Image

FYI - be sure to sysprep the image so the image can be copied from one system to the next.
