On Screen Keyboard does not display properly on tablet device when attempting to use One Time Password for Direct Access RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Please note - this is not a question but a tip sheet \ workaround  for an issue that we have discovered.

We are using Windows 10 Enterprise on MS Surface Pro 4 plus a few other tablet devices.

We use Direct Access with One-Time-Password (OTP) enabled - we have RSA tokens to generate the password.

We are using 1511 release of Win10 + Cumulative updates and the OTP functionality works sucessfully, until we had a tablet without a keyboard attached.

We found that the On-Screen-Keyboard (OSK) did not display when the user is prompted for OTP credentials.

Nothing we did enabled the OSK and we raised a ticket with MS Premier support.

While investigating the issue, we discovered a workaround that may help some other users while the root cause is investigated.

On the tablet, from Settings > Devices > Typing enable the option to "Add a standard keyboard layout as a touch keyboard option"

When prompted for OTP after this, you need follow these steps.

Touch the Text entry box, then the OK button, then Text entry box, then OK button then the Text box again and the OSK will display.

This was confirmed on multiple devices and different tablets, the 5 touches would bring up the OSK and enable text entry in the OTP prompt.

No idea why this occurs, and you don't need to select the standard keyboard layout to enable this functionality.

This process still works even after turning OFF the option to "Add a standard keyboard layout as a touch keyboard option", so I can only guess that this option tells windows to display the OSK for special text boxes.

Please note that the 5 key press sequence does not work without the option to "Add a standard keyboard layout as a touch keyboard option" being enabled at least once.
