Windows Server 2003 Windows Time Service wont start - Error 2 The system cannot find the file specified

    Question

  • Hi Guys,

I'm having problems with one of our servers.

The time is out of sync but I can't resync with an NTP server because the Windows Time Service isn't running. When I try to start the service I get:
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified

w32tm.exe is in the system32 folder as is the dll w32time.dll so there shouldn't be a problem starting the service

    What could be causing this?

Our backups are failing as a result of the time difference

  • Hello,

    try the following:

open a command window and run "net stop w32time" followed by "w32tm /unregister", "w32tm /register" and "net start w32time" and then
    "w32tm /resync".
