How to activate Windows 7 KMS key on KMS host? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In our company we have aserver which has VAMT 2.0 installed. Also on this server the KMS key for office 2010 is activated with the command slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx and that is working. But when I try the same for our Windows 7 KMS key it doesn't work.

    How can I fix this?

  • If you don't have a proper DNS you will need to tell the Windows 7 client where the KMS host resides using slmgr /skms KMSserverIP or name, then activate Windows usingslmgr /ato. If you want to activate Office you need to do the same but here is a different command. On the Windows 7 PC open a terminal, go into the Office folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14) and type cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:KMSserverIP or name; this is to tell Office where the KMS server is. Now you need to activate it by typing cscript ospp.vbs /act. For more infor you can read this articles:

  • Hi,

Could you please let me know your OS version?

If it’s windows server 2008, you could refer to the link below:

Title: KMS activation of Windows 7 using a Windows Server 2008 machine
    URL: http://blogs.technet.com/b/danbuche/archive/2010/02/11/kms-activation-of-windows-7-using-a-windows-server-2008-machine.aspx

If it’s Windows Server 2008 R2, you could watch the video as followed:

  • The KMS host is a Windows Server 2008 R2. The DNS is correctly configured, so the clients makes connection to this host.

But I can't find a way to activate the kms keys, for office 2010 this worked. I'm going to watch the video that James give me.

Of what I see on the video, you only need to activate the Windows Server 2008 R2 with an KMS key. The windows 7 clients needs to install the windows 7 KMS key and then they activate through this server. Thats it?
On this moment I activated one windows 7 client with this method.

  • Yes, you need to activate using your KMS key a Windows Server 2008 R2 server with Microsoft using the online method or telephone, then this server will activate all your Vista,7,Server 2008, Office clients; depends on your key channel which editions of Windows you can activate.
