Need Disk Storage Hardware Recommendation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have a physical Server 2016 machine running DPM 2016. I am looking to replace a 5 year old iSCSI attached 40Tb Drobo B1200i with something else. Our DPM currently has 25Tb allocated and 16 of that used.

Does anyone have any hardware recommendations? We're primarily Dell so I'd like to stay with Dell if possible and stay with something that can be iSCSI attached. Would a simple Dell MD1420 DAS work? I have been reading about ReFs and MBS and looking to make sure I buy hardware that will work with DPM 2016.   I am not much of a hardware guy so I am looking for suggestions.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

DPM doesn't really "care" where the disks come from, as long as the disks are visible in the operating system, then they can be used by DPM, pretty simple really.

However, before buying you should always make sure that the hardware is certified for the Windows Server operating system, in your case for Windows Server 2016.

Most organizations tend to go with one branded hardware, in your case if you are running mainly Dell hardware, it would be quite logical to go for Dell storage (but it's not a must/requirement!).

The Dell MD1420 is certified for Windows Server 2016 and even Windows Server 2019, so it should work just perfectly, as long as the storage is certified you should be fine using that for DPM.

You can check if the hardware is certified for Windows Server over here:

  • Hi,

When running DPM 2016 / 2019 on Windows 2016 / Windows 2019 and using Modern Backup Storage (MBS) it is highly recommended that you try to implement Tiered storage using a 5% SSD tier.  Over time, the ReFs volume becomes fragmented which leads to slower backups due to long ReFs clone times that DPM uses for recovery points.

There is a good write up on how to configure tiered storage HERE.  So I would plan on buying storage that has some SSD disks so you can utilize them in the DPM Storage pool volume.
