Windows 7 Ultimate N -- no media players

    Question

  • I have Windows 7 Ultimate N, 64 bit, installed.  There is no  media player or media center.  I go to MS support, and they direct me to download a Windows Media Pack.  I try to install, but installation fails every time.  Any one with an idea?

  • Hi,

Did you try to install the following package? If not, please go to download and install it:

Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N with Service Pack 1 and Windows 7 KN with Service Pack 1 (KB968211)

If it fails to install, you may temporarily disable the third party security programs and boot in Clean Boot to install.

Also, please let me know the detailed error message and if you have installed other players which may conflict.

    Regards,

  • Downloaded file.  I keep getting "unspecified error" message from Windows StandAlone Installer, and procedure aborts without installing

  • Hi,

Have you disabled the third party security programs and boot in Clean Boot to install the package?

Also, please let me know if there is detailed error message received and please upload the cbs.log from %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log for our further research.

  • Hi Steven,

Could you help clarify the issue with the following questions for further research?

    1. “Did a clean boot...the installer worked fine”: did the Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N with Service Pack 1 and Windows 7 KN with Service Pack 1 (KB968211) install successfully in Clean Boot?

    2. “but still "failed" to install the media update”: where did you find the failure? Is it still no media player or media center feature?

    3. Is there any error or message received when you try to install it in clean boot?

Also, please upload the cbs.log from %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log for further research.

  • I cannot get that file to download, as it says "access denied"...  On clean boot, the "windows standalone installer" actually opened and went to load the update with the media player.  That's where the failure to occur, as no installation occurred.

  • To get access to the CBS.log file, open the Start Menu, go to All Programs - Accessories , right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator . In Command Prompt, type the following:

    notepad %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

and press Enter. You can then copy/paste the contents of the file into a new text file, and upload that file.

  • That page gives me an error message that the item doesn't exist or isn't available. Did you share the SkyDrive folder with everyone, as suggested at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65 ?

It might be easier to upload the log file to http://www.rapidshare.com instead, and post the resulting link here.

  • I can't find any references to KB968211 in that log file (it only goes back to April 27th). Have you recently tried to install the Windows Media Pack?

I have roughly the same remark as KetanT. We can't magically provide you with a solution if you don't even bother to answer our questions.
