Windows 7 Failed Logons when managing user accounts RRS feed

  • Question

  • Environment: Clean installation of Windows 7 SP1 on VirtualBox with VBox extensions installed.  No other software.  Not connected to a domain.

I log in as a user, not Administrator, but is part of the Administrators localgroup.  I've gone into the audit policy and set 'Audit logon event' to 'Success, Failure'

Whenever I open the user account management window I notice that there are is a failed logon event in the security events (Event ID 4625) for ever user created on the system.   Every action I take within the user account window shows more failed logon attempts- when I click on "Manage another account" a new set of failed logons will appear, when I create a new account the same thing happens.  If I set a lockout policy to lockout user accounts after X failed logon attempts, eventually all of  my accounts become locked just because I'm doing account management.

This doesn't happen when I use the 'net user' command from cmd.exe.

Has anybody else seen this issue?  I haven't found any posts?
