Windows 7 is not genuine with black desktop

    Question

  • Hi there,

I have just purchased an acer aspire laptop 1 week ago in Singapore Challenger with preinstalled windows 7, thus i do not have any backup disc or code.  Today, when i started my pc, the whole desktop was black and came with a message that this copy of windows is not genuine windows 7 build 7600. I tried system restore to a date where windows was already activated but it did not work. Please advise what should i do as i need to use the laptop urgently. Thank you. I have run the diagnosis program from windows and the following is the results.

I have run the diagnosis tool and the following is the report.

There should be a sticker on the machine, possibly on the bottom, that has the Product Key for your W7 installation.  You should be able to activate using that key.

  • I think your only options are to complain to the vendor or buy a legitimate copy of Windows 7.

Is there any missing files or is it definitely a non genuine windows but why was it working fine with windows activated when i just bought it for a week?

Im sure challenger and acer is a reputable brand too and don't see users who bought it have this problem except for mine.

Don't it comes with a factory image or partition, say on a D drive for recovery to the factory or initial setting? Verify it under start>computer to verify how many drive are there?

Fyi challenger is a reputable technology product retailer, if you still get the prompt that windows is not genuine, contact challenger or microsoft directly either by email or phone, i'm sure they would be obliged to help you on this matter

  • Thanks for the replies guys. I went to start>computer, there is a Acer(C:Drive) with a windows/disc picture.

I tried system restore, comparing previous c drive folder to see if there are any files deleted but still nothing works. My only option is to go back to challenger i guess since even when i contact microsoft, i do not have any activation key when i bought the laptop. But i dont get why is it only my laptop having this problem and its only a week old...

  • Majority of branded laptop or desktop are preinstall with windows and doesn't require any activation key, all you need to do is run setup if you're prompt when u first power up the laptop. As for activation, if you did not uncheck the automatic activation check box, it would automatic update itself when you go online

Lastly if you could give us the exact model of the acer laptop that would helps

Btw if the acer laptop comes with acer eRecovery feature, you could do the following

    1. Power on the machine
    2. At the white ACER BIOS screen, hold the “Alt” key and press the “F10” key simultaneously to start Acer eRecovery
    3. Once eRecovery has loaded, click “Restore to Factory Default Settings”
    4. Click “OK” to continue
    5. From here, the eRecovery process will update all the data on the C: drive and restore a fully functional factory image (approximately 10 minutes).
    6. Once eRecovery has run, press “OK” to reboot unit

There's a period for the end user to activate windows say for instance 30 days, if the preinstall windows was not activated in the first place and once the date is up, you would get the non genuine windows prompt as well as the black screen

Glad to help.  Thanks for the feedback.

As to why it became deactivated, I don't know.  Maybe something to do with the manner in which Acer originally activated the Windows on their OEM install.  Did it actually say someplace that it had been activated?  There is some period of time during which it will run even without activation.

Im pretty sure it was activated when i just bought it for 1 week as i did not have any black screen or windows is not genuine prompt. I bought this laptop acer timelinex 3820tg from challenger acer roadshow where many people bought it too and was posted in a local popular forum for reviews/hardware stuff and no one experienced this problem.

But anyway thanks again for the help. Hope it dosent shows up again.

  • Hi there,

If system restore is unable to resolve such problem... You can try re-entering your product key by choosing the change product key option on the activation window. If online activation fails, you can try the automated phone system by calling 866-740-1256 or check this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/activate-windows-7-on-this-computer if all else fails, you may try running the windows validation tool at: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/DownloadValidationSupport.aspx?displaylang=en if all else fails then you may try performing a repair installation/inplace upgrade using your recovery disc or Windows 7 disc (note: be mindful to use only the disc that is specific for your Microsoft product and system manufacturer if it's OEM).

    Hope this helps!
