How to optimize Windows 10 update traffic in a large network RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

A customer of us has a central location and about 100 subsidiaries, in which many Windows 10 Pro workstations are used. The customer cannot afford so many Windows 10 Enterprise licenses. The subsidiaries cannot download directly from Windows Update, but must go through the central location.

One plan to optimize network bandwidth distributing upgrades through a central WSUS 2019 server is to have a GPO for each subsidiary telling the workstations there to distribute updates internally. We would then hope that only one or two workstations per subsidiary would download the large update packages and then distribute them to other workstations in the same IP subnet.

Do current Windows 10 Pro versions offer better means of controlling this by new GPO settings? Or could we have one workstation in each subsidiary run 24/7 and force this one single workstation to load updates and then distribute it locally?

    Best Regards, Stefan Falk
