Virtualisation of Windows 2019 Essentials on a Windows 2019 Standard RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I've been searching the Internet quite some regarding the options to install Windows Essentials (2019 but also 2016) as a VM (Hyper guest). Next to this installation I would also like to install a separate (Virtual) 2019 standard machine, used as an application server. In my ideal situation this would run on one physical box but would keep the option to move either of these 2 Virtual Servers to another machine when needed (I have a spare left as backup). How can this best be accomplished?

I have found that 2019 Essentials can be installed as a HyperV guest on a 2019 Essentials Host but with the Essentials role stripped (and HyperV added). The problem is however that I also found that numerous people have had problems that this can be the only guest installed on this host. Whenever they try to install another (separate licensed) 2019 standard installation (example), the systems starts to shutdown every week due to EULA licensing issues. So I guess this is not an option for me.

Remains an option to install both of the HyperV guests on 2019 Core (no gui) and manage the servers from a separate pc using the provided tools. I think this would require a license for both 2019 standard and Essentials. Another option would be to install 2019 standard on the bare-metal and also install 2019 standard as a HyperV guest inside this installation next to the 2019 Essentials. I cannot however find any conformation whether this is a valid option. Can anyone elaborate on that? So basically my question is whether 2019 Essentials (or 2016 for that matter) can be installed as a HyperV guest on a 2019 standard Host or a 2019 Core . Anyone know the answer?

"One thing I am still uncertain about is whether the licensing of 2016/2019 Essentials (25 user/single domain) is still permitted on a 2019 standard host (with seperate licencse)? It won't start shutting down every week as i've read?"
if i understanding is right, there are 2 physical servers in your environment.
old physical server installed w2012 essentials and will be installed w2019 standard core without gui
new physical server will be installed w2019 standard with hyper-v role and be installed 2 vm guests in it.Meanwhile ,one of vm guest must server essentials, the other vm is w2019 standard.

for your 2 options,we need to purchase one windows server 2019 standard(e.g 16 cores) for your old physical server and one windows server 2019 standard(e.g 16 cores) for your new physical server.we also need to purchase windows server 2019 essentials for your one guest vm .we need to purchase w2019 standard cals for your end users who need to access w2019 standard version.

in general ,windows server 2019 standard support 2 guest vms by default. for w2019 standard hyper-v host and one guest vm of w2019 standard can use the same product key to activate.the other guest vm of w2019 essentials/w2016 essentials can only use w2019 essentials/w2016 essentials product key to activate.for using w2016 essentials ,we need to downgrade from w2019 essentials by contacting Microsoft Licensing Activation Centers Support.

if you don't mind purchasing windows server 2019 (include server cal) and windows 2019 essentials ,i think your 2 options can come true ,there is no problem.for server essentials version ,inplace-upgrade is not a good option ,so in general,we need to migrate from w2012 essentials physical server to w2019/w2016 essentials vm.

  • Hi Andy,

Sorry for my late response; I've been busy and haven't come around to answering. I still have to make all the purchases but after speaking to a Microsoft license dealership I think I know what I have to do; Acquire

    W 2019 Standard
    W 2019 Essentials
A new Server with enough specs to run 2 Virtualized Server OS'es
So that from the current setup:

One hardware server with 2012 essentials
One hardware server with 2008 standard
    Can be mirated to

One hardware server with 2019 standard (host)
One guest VM with 2019 standard (replaces 2008 standard)
One guest VM with 2016 Essentials (can be installed with the 2019 Essentials key and can be a inplace migration)
Keep the old 2012 Essentials server as backup on a server with 2019 core to be used for emergency.
Lateron I can then (when all hardware is again up-to-date and safe) upgrade the 2016 Essentials to 2019 Essentials or to a non-essentials setup ;but for now 2016 Essentials is ok enough.

I Hope this might help other people with similar problems in figuring out how to go foreward in situations like mine. @Andy , thanks for thinking with me.

    Kind regards, Martin

Technically it shouldn't be a problem to do as described, as long as licensing is in order. Legally speaking you're reseller's train licensing specialist can help you or also ask microsoft directly.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. So can you confirm that when I install 2019 Standard with a correct license (16 cores eg) that I can install 2019 standard as a guest and next to it A windows 2016 or 2019 Essentials install (with a license for this product)? The link that you provided links to a form in wich I have to fill-in some kind of license / agreement number that I don't have. Is there an option to ask these questions without earlier agreements?

  • Yes, it should not be a problem technically speaking. As to licensing you can also call into the activation center.

  • HI

can you confirm that when I install 2019 Standard with a correct license (16 cores eg) that I can install 2019 standard as a guest and next to it A windows 2016 or 2019 Essentials install (with a license for this product)?
The answer is no.please note windows server 2019 standard and windows server 2019 essentials have removed server essentials experience roles.

    https://www.theofficemaven.com/news/windows-server-2019-essentials

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-essentials/get-started/what-s-new-19

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started-19/editions-comparison-19

so if we want to use only one windows server product license to authenticate and activate 2 guest vm for free ,there is only one method .
method 1:downgrade windows server 2019 standard to windows server 2016 standard first.for this condition we can build windows server 2016 standard as hyper-v host and create 2 server 2016 standard vm as guest.
now one guest vm,we can install server essentials experience roles and this vm as DC with Full FSMO.
the other guest vm ,we can act application server .2 guest w2016standard vms can be activated free by using the same w2016 standard product key.
for this method we only need to buy only one windows server w2019 standard product and w2019 standard license (include windows server 2019 standard cals ,windows server 2019 core license(e.g 16 cores)).

    <-Guest 2016 Standard + Guest 2016 standard (install Essentials experirence role)->
                        |
    <-Host Bare metal 2016 Standard>

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if we only want to use server 2019 standard and windows server 2019 essentials /2016 essentials,we need to purchase one server 2019 standard product license(include server 2019 cals ,windows server 2019 core license(e.g 16 cores)) and one server 2019 essentials product (for using windows server 2016 essential ,we need to downgrade from w2019 essentials).
for this condition,we can installed windows server 2019 standard as hyper-v host and we can only free license/activate one windows server 2019 standard guest vm by using this w2019 std product key .meanwhile the other vm server 2019/2016 essentials ,we need to use server 2019 /2016 essentials product keyto activate it.

  • Hi Andy,

Thank you for your extensive reply; I hope that I understand what you are saying.

I knew that with the introduction of Windows 2019, The Experience role of the Essentials series has been removed/stripped and is basically discontinued :(

My current installation that I am running is a Windows 2012 Essentials (non-r2, migrated from a SBS2003, long time ago). The puzzle i'm trying to solve is; how to go foreward from here. In any case I want the option to be a HyperV (virtualized) so that future hardware moves can be made easier (and also backups). Furthermore the Essentials is for me still interesting because of the number of users we have (14/15 people) and this fits the 25 users max of the essentials product. The experience role is not really needed anymore.

From what I understand I have two options

    1) Go with the last Windows 2016 Essentials as HyperV Guest
    - Acquire a Windows 2019 standard license (16 core) + Windows 2016 Essentials license
    - Install this Windows 2019 standard as a bare-metal with HyperV enabled as Host
    - Do a miration install from the existing 2012 Essentials  (non r2) to 2016 Essentials in a Guest HyperV on the bare-metal Host (2019 standard)
    - Do a seperate 2019 standard install in a Guest HyperV on the Baremetal Host (2019 standard)
    - Decommision the 2012 Essentials
    - Reinstall as 2019 core as emergency fallback host for HyperV guests

<-Guest 2019 Standard + Guest 2016 Essentials (with Essentials experirence role)
                        |
    <-Host Bare metal 2019 Standard>

    2) Go with the new 2019 Essentials as HyperV Guest
    - Acquire a Windows 2019 standard license (16 core) + 2019 Essentials license
    - Install this Windows 2019 standard as a bare-metal with HyperV enabled as Host
    - Do a miration install from the existing 2012 Essentials (non r2) to 2012r2 in a Guest HyperV on the bare-metal Host (2019 standard)
    - Do a miration install from the existing 2012r2 Essentials to 2019 Essentials in a Guest HyperV on the bare-metal Host (2019 standard)
    - (OR do a clean install of Essentials 2019 and rebuild domain)
    - Decommision the 2012r2 Essentials
    - Do a seperate 2019 standard install in a Guest HyperV on the Baremetal Host (2019 standard)
    - Reinstall the old server as 2019 core as emergency fallback host for HyperV guests

    -Guest 2019 Standard + Guest 2019 Essentials->
                       |
    <-Host Bare metal 2019 Standard>

Or is option 1 is basically what you described as your last option I guess and maybe for me the best. Lateron we can always move away from Essentials 2016 again into 2019 standard/essentials when we are finally virtualized i guess?

One thing I am still uncertain about is whether the licensing of 2016/2019 Essentials (25 user/single domain) is still permitted on a 2019 standard host (with seperate licencse)? It won't start shutting down every week as i've read?

Thanks again for you help! I hope this can also help others in similar situations.
    Regards, Martin

Technically it should not be a problem to do as you described. The hourly automatic licensing shutdown only happens when an evaluation expires and activation was not done. The weekly compliance shutdown should only occur because of an improper configuration.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/existing-customer/activation-centers

Answers of legal licensing question from anonymous forums users would not be legally binding. Better to ask your reseller's trained licensing specialist or you can also call into the volume activation center.
