Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Activation Fails with Error Code: 0x80070424

    Question

  • I recently bought a new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on it.  I did a Windows Anytime Upgrade online to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.  I activated the new version with they key they supplied me without a hitch.  A day later Windows is telling me that my copy of Windows is not genuine.  When I attempt to re-activate windows I get error Code: 0x80070424 with Description: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Possibly related - Windows Updates are also failing with the same eror code.

I've searched lots of forums for an answer but didn't find one with that same reported error code.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I copied the text into a reg file and successfully imported it into my registry.  Unfortunately when I manually start the "SPP Notification Service" via the Services console it still starts and immediately stops.

I really appreciate all your suggestions Andre.  Thanks to you and all who replied.  I'm going to do an HP Recovery and start from scratch.

  • You need to call Microsoft @ the activation phone number for your country so someone can get your system working correctly.

  • Rick Dee'

Thank you for your suggestion.  When attempting to get to the Activate by Phone interface (via slui.exe) I get a pop-up windows that tells me an error has occured.  If I show details I see the error code and description mentioned in my original post.  I'm not sure if they will be able to help me if I have no place to punch the codes in but I will give it a try.

    sfc.exe /scannow

Is it able to find and repair broken files? Can the service be started now?

sfc.exe /scannow ran successfully (see text from cmd window below):

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc.exe /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    C:\Windows\system32>

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The sfcdetails.txt file is empty.

Unfortunately slui.exe still fails with the same error code.   When I attempt to manually start the "SPP Notification Service" via the Services console it starts and immediately stops.

I'm starting to think a complete reinstall might be required here...however I still welcome any other suggestions you might have.

    Gratefully,

  • Since the service does not start after you repair related Registry branches, related components in system folder could be corrupt by some reasons. Maybe it is caused by incorrect behavior from incompatible antivirus or system optimizer applications.

Andre has introduced the troubleshooting liner for this kind of issues. Generally for system services corrupt issues, if they do not work after you did the above suggestion, you need to repair the system. In case that you have a Windows 7 installation DVD, try to run In-place Upgrade. However if only OEM recovery disc is available, restoring to OEM status may be the only choice.

Thanks for letting us know the result.

  • Thank you for this information.  It resolved an activation issue I was having with a client PC. I think there is difference for home and pro!  He was completely missing this registry entry.

    THANK YOU!

  • FWIW, this problem is usually the result of the use of a Registry Cleaner (mostly WiseFixer) - 'encourage' the client not to do such things in future. :)
