  • Hello,

    1. Log on as a (new) user and configure the Start Screen layout the way you want.
    2. Export the Start Screen Layout to XML using the "Export-StartLayout" PowerShell command; saving it to a network location all computers have access to:

    Export-StartLayout -Path "\\server\sharedFolder\start_layout.xml" -As XML

    3. Using GPedit.msc, create a new Policy
    4. Open the policy, and navigate to User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar, and edit the Start Screen Layout policy setting.
    5. Enable the policy setting and type in the path to the XML configuration file you created before (ie: \\server\sharedFolder\start_layout.xml).
    6. Apply the new Policy to the OU containing the Users you want it to apply to.

    The user's start screen will be configured as per the XML configuration file the next time they log onto the computer.

  • Hi Jituuu,

    You could customize the start layout, then export it to apply to other windows by group policy.

  • Run the command again as administrator and open it with a professional text editor like  notepad plus plus ( )

    Xml file should look like this:

    LayoutModificationTemplate xmlns:defaultlayout="" xmlns:start="" Version="1" xmlns="">
      <LayoutOptions StartTileGroupCellWidth="6" />
          <defaultlayout:StartLayout GroupCellWidth="6" />

  • Hi Jituuu,

    Try to run PowerShell as an administrator and Run the following command in the PowerShell console:

    export-startlayout -as bin -path c: \customstartscreenlayout.bin –verbose

  • Your mistake is on the command. The correct command is

    Export-StartLayout -Path "\\server\sharedFolder\start_layout.xml"

    Your command is

    Export-StartLayout -Path "\\server\sharedFolder\start_layout.bin"

    You are exporting the layout data in an incorrect format.

    did you ever find the solution for the issue with non readable format?
