KB4528760 failing to install on a third of my Windows 10 systems RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've got an issue where KB4528760 (January Cumulative Update) is failing to install on about a third of my Windows 10 1903 Enterprise systems.  Running system file checker, DISM restorehealth, and the Windows Update Troubleshooter is not finding any issues or corruption.  I've also tried renaming the softwaredistribution and catroot2 folders as well.  The systems do have the January servicing stack update installed though.  I'm not really sure what else to try and am hoping that someone might have some ideas.  Really hoping I don't have to re-image a bunch of computers just to keep them secure.  I added some entries from the failures I'm seeing in the WindowsUpdate.log

  • Update on this. I also used expand.exe to get the CAB out of the MSU. Then ran DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\Windows10.0-KB4528760-x64_PSFX.cab and received this error:

    An error occurred - Package_for_RollupFix Error: 0x800f0988

    Error: 0x800f0988

DISM failed. No operation was performed.

    DISM.log has the following errors:

  • There are multiple reports of errors when installing KB4528760, so you are not alone.

"related operations can be found at %WINDIR%\logs\CBS\cbs.log"
so can you share this file with us?

  • Hi,

You can manually download and install these updates from the Microsoft catalog blog to see if the issue remains.

  • Farena:  I tried to install it from the catalog but it still failed. Interestingly on one computer where the update was failing, I upgraded it to version 1909 and then installed the KB4528760 for 1909 version instead and it installed successfully.

  • I'm afraid corporate policy keeps me from sharing the entire log however here is the pertinent information pertaining to the update failure.

  • Hi,

You could install WinDbg from Microsoft website and analyze crash dump files.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/debugger-download-tools

Please understand that from our professional level, we do not provide dump/log analysis. In addition, if this problem is more urgent for you I still recommend that you open a case to Microsoft for further professional help.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4341255/support-for-business

Also, as workaround, you could upgrade to version 1909.

    Best Regards,

    Farena

  • I opened a case with Microsoft.  I've also setup a compliance baseline in SCCM to get the number of machines that have actually failed to install.  If anyone want to do the same I'm using the below PowerShell script for detection:

    if(Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{Logname='System';Level=2;ID=20} -MaxEvents 1 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |  Where-Object { $_.Message -like '*KB4528760*' }){$true}else{$false}

  • Microsoft pointed me to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4528159/when-trying-to-install-updates-from-windows-update-you-might-receive-u.  Works great.  I'm using SCCM to send out the command and force the reboot and after that, KB4528760 installing correctly.

This method worked for me.  Thanks.  For those who have similar issues, here's the link to the 1909: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4528760

Just select the version that fits your OS.  Hope this helps.
