Windows 7 cannot access samba shares
General discussion
-
I have three samba shares on a linux machine that I want to access with a windows 7 machine. The windows 7 machine can "see" the linux machine and enumerates the shares fine, however when I click to open them I get an error message stating...Windows cannot access \\COMPUTER\ShareYou do not have permission to access \\COMPUTER\Share. Please contact your network administrator to request access. Some useful information...1- Neither host has any sort of firewall running2- Windows XP computers can view the shares just fine3- The hosts are in the same workgroup4- telnetting to ports 139/445 from the win7 host to the linux host gives a connection (i.e. this is not a network issue)5- Windows Media Center IS able to open the shares and view the files6- I have already tried every registry modification Google could find7- IPv6 and SMBv2 are both disabled8- The troubleshooting utility states "Your user account doesn't have permission to access \\COMPUTER\Share"9- The shares on the linux machine are on an NTFS drive which initially made me think it was a filesystem permission issue, however (see #5), it works thereAny help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so very much. I'm running out of hair to pull out.

1. You should lower the authentication level to cover samba.
2. Use network monitor to catch the traffic.

Hi,
Based on my research, please try the following:
1. Please enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box.
2. Navigate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Settings.
3. In the right panel, please change the following policy:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Change the value to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.
4. Please search Advanced sharing settings in Control Panel, click Manage advanced sharing settings and expand Home or Work. In the File Sharing connections section, please choose Enable file sharing for devices that use 40- or 56-bit encryption.
Now, please test the issue again and see how it works.
Hope this helps.

I actually came across those solutions before on a few other forums but neither solved the problem for me.
Thank you for the advice none-the-less.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Based on the current situation, I’m afraid that we may have to use Network Monitor to troubleshoot the issue.

Is there an option for Windows 7 Home Premium users who cannot use gpedit.msc?
Thank you
