media player 11 no sound

    Question

  • I need some help.  I have no sound when trying to play on media player 11 in windows xp.  I also have corel 9 windvd and that has no sound.  Everything else on my computer does have sound (messanger, games etc.)  How do I get the sound to work on media player?  I have tried the sync tab and that does not work.  I also tried to disabling one by one and that did not work.  Is my sound card maybe not compatable?  Please help.

Hi, my name’s Cody, and I’m working with the Windows Media Outreach Team to help answer questions folks might have about their copies of Windows Media Player.

Instead of just randomly downloading codec packs with the hope that one of them works, I’d recommend downloading a codec tool that will analyze your particular video file, whatever it is, and tell you exactly what codec(s) you’ll need to play the files.

Here are a couple of free tools that will do this for you:  Gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and Sherlock (http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html) Both of these work great, and using these on your file will tell you what codecs you need to get a file running properly, without making you download anything that you don’t need.

A lot of times codecs can conflict with one another, and overloading your system with them is never a good idea.

You also might want to check out this page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx  It’s a great guide to codecs that Microsoft has made available.

I hope this is helpful!  Let me know if this solves your problem!

    Thanks,

    Cody

Hi Cody or anyone else who can help,

I hope you can help here too.  I've just put service pack three on XP home edition.  Windows media player was working just fine until then, as was the sound on video (cyberlink power dvd) & outlook express.

Since I loaded SP3 I've lost sound *only* in Windows media player.  Everything else is just fine.

I'm not much into computers so would appreciate answers in a basic form.  I have checked volume though (I'm not quite that basic :-)).

    Cheers

ps I also tried upgrading from media player 8 to media player 11 (no luck).  Also tried CD in player rather than music stored on computer and it didn't make a difference.
