  • You can start the Print Spooler using the following procedure:

    1. In the Administrative Tools folder (click Start, then Control Panel, then System and Maintenance and then Administrative Tools), open the Services snap-in.
    2. Locate the Print Spooler service in the list of services and confirm that the status is Started. If it is not, select the service and on the Action menu, click Start.

However, I'm not sure that this is the root of the problem - you might have other issues. If this does not work, check with the printer manufacturer for an updated Windows Vista print driver and install the new driver. If there is not a new driver available, you might want to try uninstalling the printer and reinstalling the printer driver you have been using.

    I hope that this helps,

  • I FOUND THE FIX.

Ok, so I have had this same problem trying to install my HP Photosmart 8450. I have been searching for weeks and I found this post here (http://www.chicagotech.net/netforums/viewtopic.php?p=3956&sid=d7e9109972bed8e5db13a5c24d5ca4aa)

Basically it turned out to be a corrupt driver. However windows update wouldnt let me install a new one because the new one's compatibility rating was lower or some lame reason. So the problem seemed unfixable. Step 1 cured all my problems. Don't forget to restart after step 1.

    HERE IT IS=======================================================

A: Step 1: Clear the print caches
    ===============
    1. Open "Computer" and browse to the folder
"c:\windows\system32\spool\printers" and delete all the files in the folder.
    2. Do the same to clear the content in the folder
    "c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86"
    3. Reboot.

If the above step doesn't work, please perform the next one.

Step 2: Reset the printer spooler
    ============
    a. Click Start, type "Net stop RPCSS" (without quotation marks) in the
Start Search box and press Enter.
    b. Click Start, type the following command in the Start Search box, and
    then press Enter.

    sc config spooler depend= RPCSS

Note: There is a space after "=" but not in front of "=". I still
recommend that you copy and paste it.

    c. Click Start, type "Net start RPCSS" (without quotation marks) in the
Start Search box and press Enter.
    d. Click Start, type "Net start SPOOLER" (without quotation marks) in the
Start Search box and press Enter.
    e. Please install the printer again.

If the issue persists, please go on to Step 3 since the issue can be caused
by some corrupted printer drivers on the computer.

    Step 3: Reinstall Printer Drivers
    ===================
    NOTES:

    a) Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee
that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be
solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

    b) Using this method will remove all of the printer drivers installed on
the system. You need to reinstall the printer drive in order for the
    printer to work.

    1. Log into the system as an administrator, click Start, type regedit in
the Start Search box and click OK to run regedit.exe.

    2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print, click
Registry->Export Registry File on the menu, and export the current key to a
REG file for backup. (Note: You may double click on the REG file in Windows
Explorer to restore the original settings)

    3. Go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window
s NT x86\Drivers, remove both the Version-2 and Version-3 keys if they
    exist.

    4. Remove all sub keys under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers. (Do not
    remove the Printers key.)

    5. Go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window
s NT x86\PrintProcessors, delete any processor that is not the following:

    winprint

    6. Go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers, delete
any provider that is not one of the following:

    Internet Print Provider
    LanMan Print Services

    7. Go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors, delete
any monitor that is not one of the following:

    BJ Language Monitor
    Local Port
    PJL Language Monitor
    Standard TCP/IP Port
    USB Monitor
    Windows NT Fax Monitor
    AppleTalk Printing Devices
    LPR Port

    8. Exit the registry editor.

    9. Remove all files from the following directories if they exist:
    C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2
    C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3

    10. Reboot and install the printer drivers again.

  • I've been trying to get the printer to work on my mother's computer and starting the spooler per Jason's instructions above did the trick.  Thanks.
