Urgh, SP3 "An Internal Error Occurred" :(

    Question

  • Hello, I'm having a nightmare with this SP3 installation on a Centrino laptop with XP SP2 currently installed. I am logged in the stock 'Administrator' account and have tried safe mode.

    When tying to install the .exe I get the errors "An internal error occurred", followed by "Service pack 3 installation did not complete" - this shows up after "checking product key" appears on the install sreen.

    I have...

    searched the registry for $%& to delete, there are none.

    tried installing in safe mode.

    tried reset.cmd

    tried subnacl.msi

    So I'm a little stuck now.  Here's the log file:

  • I've already tried that one as well Sad

    I was hoping something in that log would give away the problem(s)?

  • 0x1ffe054f (in your log) usually means a problem with registering DLL's when installing SP2.  See if you have licdll.dll on your PC.  If so, enter regsvr32 licdll.dll at the Run command, restart and see if that works.  If not, maybe check out  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

  • The licdll.dll file ws there; but still no luck Sad

    I wonder if it could be to do with the other admin account situation?

  • thestocky,

    If you download and run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics tool from

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

    does it show a License Key which matches the Windows License Key on the bottom of the laptop?

    Do not post your full License Key here!

    You got me, registering the file "was supposed" to fix it.  Did you try what was at the link?

    I don't "think" so, since most have two admin accounts.  Their regular account that's also an admin, and the admin only logon.  You might want to try using the full main admin account and see what happens.

  • I'm currently using the admin account that logs on as username "administrator" - I thought that was the full admin account?

    I've just tried installing Windows Update online, an it just hangs on the updating page after clicking "Express" or "Custom" with the progress bar.

    Also tried downloading the IE7 update .exe, then running it, but it also justs hangs on the progres bar.  Something must be stopping these installations - it's just knowing what it is?!

    I'd personally wipe it, but it's not my PC and has loads of SW on it Sad

  • The license key is actually diferent to the sticker! No worries though, as it vaidates fine and will be a legal copy as it's technically a government PC.

  • thestocky,

    Your description of Windows Update and IE7 install not working makes it sounds like there is a general problem with updates or installers on this PC, and maybe not a problem specifically with the SP3 installer.  You might get more informed advice from the "Windows Update" forum, rather than this one.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US

    In the meantime:

    - ensure that all anti-malware programs are disabled before attempting the updates;

    - ensure that firewalls are not blocking the update programs;

    - reinstall Windows Update client, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144/ method 2;

    - install Windows Installer 4.5, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288/

    Yes it is.  On every XP format on this PC I was always given two accounts; the full admin "Administrator", and the full admin "username" account.  I'm not sure why, I guess it's the way I install it.

    Disable your firewall, any maybe AV software as well.  That happens when "svchost" or "NTkernel" or "Generic host process" is being blocked.

    Could be the same reason.  I haven't touched IE7 so I can't say for sure.  See if you can get the full stand-alone download.

    Did you see my post above mentioning 0x1ffe054f ?  That's also in your log file.  You're going to have to give more info on exactly what you're seeing and exactly what is happening.

    For: IsSPBetaKeyStick out tongueLA->lpVtbl->GetProductID Failed: 0x80004005

    and Error: CheckVLKForBlock failed

    See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949384

    Do a search for that and you'll find a lot more.

    Look in your log file for other "error" or "failed" lines, do a search for those and you'll probably find the problem.
