Laptop Webcam not detected in Device Manager

    Question

  • Hi all,

I have a Gateway M-6864FX laptop, which has a built-in Chicony Webcam. Now, with Vista Ultimate x64 installed, the Webcam software and drivers work properly,
But in Windows 7 Ultimate, the Webcam is net detected at all, even in the Device Manager.

Has anyone encountered hardware that is not detected such as this? It is a real Deal-Breaker for keeping Windows 7 as I cannot use my Webcam that came with the laptop!

Any help greatly appreciated, and if more info is requested, I'll do my best to provide it.

  • I've managed to solve the problem, which turned out to be a two-fold problem:

1: By multibooting Vista x64 and Win7 x64, I compared ControlSet entries, and found the Win7 copy to be corrupt, easily fixed. The problem still persisted in a different form after this.

2: The WebCam showed up, but as a simple USB device, not using it's intended driver; I manually chose to use the Chicony Driver.

In short, it would be recommended for Microsoft to better detect WebCam driver usage, as the Chicony driver is clearly the better Driver, yet Win7 chooses to use a generic driver that does not function for this particular piece of hardware.

  • Have you try running the web cam driver in vista compatible mode and next run as adminstrator?

  • Yes, as well as many different drivers. It appears that the Webcam does not even exist as far as Win7 is concerned. I have the correct driver, Win7 Certified from a Toshiba install (As well as Vista x64 drivers from the original driver set), but Windows 7 cannot see my hardware at all. The webcam is still fully functional in Vista x64.

I suggest you to use the driver that comes with the drivers CD or download from gateway since you mention your notebook is gateway, here's the link for your gateway driver. Care to share the win 7 ultimate is 32 or 64bit?? It would be advisable to use back the same bit for the driver and the OS

What was different about the current control set entries?  What made you think to look there to resolve the problem?  (There can be some differences here between OS's, so you should not assume that they should be identical)

When you chose to use the Chicony driver, was that already installed on your PC?  Where did it come from?

Let's try to figure out which drivers you have now, and which ones you had before.

Please look for the device name in c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log.  Once you have that (it should be near the end of the file...it's from your most recent install attempt), copy that entire section and put it in a post here please.

Also, when you find that section, it will include the hardware ID for that device (should look like USB\VID_xxxx&PID_yyyy).  With that ID, search further up in the file.  When you find it, copy that section and put it here too.

With this information, I can get a better idea of the drivers that were used, to try to figure out what may have gone wrong here.

    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Hello Jay,

I am glad to hear that you have the problem resolved yourself. However, please keep the following method as reference if you encounter the same device driver problem in the future. First you might go to Device Manager, right click your hardware device with yellow question mark/ exclamatory mark in the front and select Update Driver Software; then click Search automatically for updated driver software.

Note: Drivers on the Windows Update site are directly provided by hardware manufacturers. Microsoft tests drivers in various environments before they are published; however, we cannot guarantee all drivers will work on all hardware platforms as there are too many different models, although their hardware ID are the same as the standard version. In some cases, due to hardware modifications by different manufacturers, the driver updates may cause some error.

If it does not work on your issue, I'd suggest you installing the Vista driver in Compatibility mode. Remove and rescan that hardware device in Device Manager, right-click on the driver executable/installer file -> Properties and select the Compatibility tab; click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows Vista in the list-down box; then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator. In addition, you can use the Windows XP driver for testing.

Meanwhile, please understand that Windows 7 is a new operating system and whole driverstore has been reprogrammed; you might wait or push the device manufacturer to upgrade its driver. Thanks for your time and understanding!

This will give you some guidelines.

    Good Luck!
