Has anyone successfully implemented backups for their SharePoint farm using DPM 2016 to include Incremental Backups.
Our backups work fine except for the Incremental backups. The Frequency (Incremental) option is not even shown on the Protection Group configuration.
The
official Microsoft documentation clearly states incremental backups are possible:
In Select short-term goals … In Synchronization
frequency you specify
how often you want to run an incremental backup to disk.
It would be very helpful to hear from anyone that is using DPM to backup SharePoint, including the
Incremental backups.
We have started a Microsoft Support incident, however, they are telling us that the documentation referenced above is wrong, and that Incremental backups are no longer supported for SharePoint Farms.
This
TechNet post regarding the same issue identifies it as a Known Issue, and includes a reference to fix in a MS document:
“Ask the DPM support engineer to reference Content ID: 2814138 to help fix the issue.”
Incremental backups are a critical workflow because, the alternative - Express Full Backups:
- require too much space and time to complete multiple backups during a day
- do not provide item-level recovery
- are primarily good for recovery of the entire database
Our environment is:
- All products and underlying Servers are 2016 and patched to the latest builds (SharePoint 2016, SQL Server 2016, DPM 2016 (build 1807))
