Windows 2012 KMS server, will it activate Server 2003 servers? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently have our KMS on a Windows 2003 server however we are in the process of decommissioning all of our 2003 servers. In the meantime we now have several Windows 2012 servers and wish to install the KMS role on one of these.

Will a KMS running on Server 2012 still activate the remaining Server 2003 boxes?

  • KMS server can run on Win2003 to active Win7, Win2012 or office 2010+, but 2003 does not use KMS/MAK. VLK/Retail/OEM for 2003. So for your question you are ok, as the 2003 will not query the KMS's server

  • Hello,

Windows server 2003 will not be activated from KMS, you have to do it your own. KMS activation started with Windows Vista and Windows server 2008. Previous OS versions are NOT activated by KMS.
